The Office of Diversity, Equity and Engagement at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science in collaboration with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) SpectrumX Center seeks to hire an Outreach and Special Projects Coordinator to lead, organize and coordinate engagement with a variety of community partners including elementary, middle, and high schools, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and community partners. These collaborations will include co-developing programming, proposals, generating budgets and designing program assessments. The STEM Outreach and Special Projects Coordinator will work directly with the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and should be adaptable to arising needs and have the capacity to learn on the job.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
School of Engineering Outreach Activities (40%)
Strategic engagement and outreach with internal and external stakeholders to plan, develop, review, and facilitate programs to inspire, engage, and develop a globally diverse STEM workforce;Provide support for expansion, and extension of existing and new outreach programs for underrepresented populations;Develop and implement a plan to build the next generation of scientists and engineers through initiatives such as community engagement programs, employer outreach initiatives, and pre-collegiate summer outreach programs.NSF’s SpectrumX Center (60%)
Build meaningful relationships with faculty, staff and students at MSIs and develop and recruiting pathways with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) for faculty and student researchers interested in radio spectrum technologies. Plan and visit MSI campuses to meet face to face with faculty and students and to present research and educational opportunities and to support students in the application process for research experiences and post-graduation opportunities. Attend, table and recruit students at national conferences of professional organizations, and other community events.Logistic support of the Broadband Mapping Using Smartphones (Broadband MAP US) Project in mapping coverage data for the major cellular carriers. Order and configure mobile phones based on project specifications. Provide logistical support for MSI faculty and student researchers who are conducting data collection, analysis, mapping and reporting to government agencies. Support MSI faculty with the subaward process in collaboration with the SpectrumX Center’s administrative staff.Support center activities related to and administered by the Broadening Participation Working Group.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Master's degree or a demonstrated mastery in their specialty area normally signified by significant equivalent experience.Experience: At least three years of project management experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Proficiency in Microsoft 365: especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

NSF’s SPECTRUMX CENTER
Funded by the National Science Foundation, SpectrumX Center is a diverse and interdisciplinary group of scientists and engineers committed to strategic research and workforce development projects that are transforming spectrum management. The Center’s Core Activities focus on research, education and workforce development and leveraging existing facilities and services.
