Career Opportunity:
The Packaging Design Engineer will work within the structure of the Operations Excellence team to lead and participate in production and process improvement activities throughout the manufacturing site. This rewarding position will involve interacting with suppliers, employees, the manufacturing processes, products, and customers. You will be responsible for managing technical projects aimed at product and process problem-solving and improvements, cost reduction, and profitability improvement. Provide technical expertise to the operating departments to drive goals and objectives. This unique position is an integral part of the day-to-day technical department ensuring compliance in both programs and reporting requirements.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
Drive continuous process improvement projects through the coordination and management of raw materials and other process trials. Determine and implement process changes and/or trials to improve efficiency, performance, and minimize variation.Gather and cleanse production and process data and perform statistical/analytical tests to uncover important variables and their impacts.A collaborating business partner within all departments. Generate production reporting, create process monitoring reports and perform daily process troubleshooting.Regularly communicate process-related data to operations and management in readily consumable way.Provide technical troubleshooting to solve process and product problemsPerform periodic reporting and deliver presentations of key project updates, performance metrics, action items and resultsKey results of position: Completed projects that measurably improve safety, quality, productivity and cost metricsServe as a facility-wide technical resource to provide general technical support to all departmentsProvide engineering expertise for conceptual studies, feasibility analysis, process design, start-up, system optimization, and trouble-shooting systems.Provide technical support on operating parameters and process optimization.Explore process changes to maximize throughput, improve product quality, and/or reduce operating costs.Analyze problems within existing systems utilizing analytical abilities and implementing recommendations for improvement.Assist production with troubleshooting quality and operational problems.Monitor pertinent quality and operational data.Optimize processes in production, operations, and administration.
What you need to succeed:
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Design or Packaging EngineeringExperience in printing, and/or packaging is a plus1-3 years of experience in process engineering role or proven comparable experiences during intern/co-op programs, preferredLean Six Sigma certification is a plus; you can attain certification in Lean Six Sigma improvement methodology with company provided trainingProven track record of collaboration within cross-functional teamsMechanical acumen, can understand how machinery worksKnowledge of CAD and ArtiosCADAbility to gather, organize, analyze, and interpret dataAbility to act as a change agent achieving results with urgencyAble to effectively organize multiple projects and actions items simultaneouslyAble to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervisionClear and effective oral and written communication skillsExperience or knowledge of Microsoft 365
