Packaging Engineer, Staff

Overview

The Staff Packaging Engineer works collaboratively with Design Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers to design, test, and implement packaging designs that are an integral part of A-dec’s Product Development Process. They also work as a sustaining Engineer to review and improve existing packaging designs.

This individual develops standards and guidelines for packaging solutions for the organization’s products and then uses these standards as a baseline for product package testing. These tests align with industry standard testing methods. They also work with internal resources and external packaging suppliers and test facilities to achieve functional packaging goals within cost targets.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supports all A-dec product lines and shipment methods, including standard and custom engineer to order (ETO) products, boxed and blanket wrapped, capital equipment and consumables.

Responsible for developing new packaging solutions early within the design phase of new product introduction (NPI) projects. Attends initial brainstorming efforts, design reviews, manufacturing reviews, etc.

Researches and finds applications for the latest trends in material selection, design, and manufacturing of the next generation packaging solutions.

Develops and maintains A-dec packaging Product Design Standards (PDS).

Drives to grow A-dec’s internal packaging testing infrastructure through targeted capital equipment investments which align with A-dec’s current and future packaging development roadmap.

Works to find opportunities to improve the quality, design, and sustainability of existing packaging solutions, while lowering the overall cost.

Mentors peers in product design reducing the need for extra and/or complex packaging solutions, yet delivers the expected product quality upon receipt.

Creates and maintains productive working relationships with existing and new packaging suppliers.

Fosters effective collaboration with Purchasing, Supplier Quality Engineering, Manufacturing, Trade and Transportation, Product Management, and other Design Engineering representatives.

Partners with both internal and external test labs to design and perform necessary verification and validation against appropriate internal, industry and environmental standards.

Partners with Regulatory and Manufacturing to design and control the necessary artwork and labeling needed for each packaging solution.


Qualifications:

Excellent communication in oral, written, presentation, and illustration form.

Comprehensive project management skills; able to manage time and resources effectively.

Thorough knowledge of engineering solutions to typical engineering problems. Capable of understanding and applying standard engineering principles, concepts, and techniques.

Thorough knowledge of the requirements of each product as it relates to the packaging design, shipping and installation process. Understanding of ISTA test standards and their application to products.

Working knowledge of international shipping requirements, the differences for LTL and FTL, and how cross-docking and trans-loading affect product delivery.

Education and Experience:

8 years of progressive experience in application of engineering theory and practice.

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 35 pounds with or without assistance on a routine basis. Must have manual hand dexterity to grasp, operate tools and equipment repetitively. Able to walk, stand, sit, bend, reach, and occasionally kneel, climb steps, and twist throughout an entire shift. Some areas may be exposed to chemicals, noise, vibration and /or dust, and require the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); such as, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, foot protection, etc.
