SUMMARY: The Packaging Engineer III will be responsible for organizing, planning, managing, and executing packaging innovation, development, and cost reduction projects for Retail, Club, Foodservice, and International businesses. The Packaging Engineer III will lead research, design, testing, justification, and deployment of new package technology to deliver new or improved packaged products. This individual will lead project teams to investigate and recommend materials, processes, innovation, packaging, and equipment to bring projects to a successful conclusion. Additionally, they will provide technical support to Product Development, Business Units (BU), Supply Chain, and Procurement in technical expertise. The individual in this role will also support Supply Chain and BU function in manufacturing of packages that meet customer and consumer expectation for character, cost, and quality in assigned product category. The Packaging Engineer III has demonstrated ability to manage/recommend projects that will lead to opportunity for innovation, growth, sustainability, intellectual property, and profitability.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage multiple packaging development, sustainability, technical application, and cost reduction projects and/or programs.Demonstrate methodologies to deliver rapid design and prototyping for consumer-based packaging design.Drive Tyson’s packaging sustainability efforts, metrics, and interactions with key customers.Provide technical support to project teams to solve manufacturing problems.Drive cost reduction identification and implementation for packaging.Responsible for assuring all projects are seen through to completion including documentation and protection of intellectual property.Partner with Business Units, Insights, Innovation, Supply Chain Engineering, Product Development R&D, Procurement, and SuppliersServe as a technical resource to the organization in packaging expertise.Lead new packaging platforms to support product innovation and development of intellectual property when applicablePartner in problem identification and problem resolution to facilitate new or improved packages, packaging upgrades, new, or improved processes and cost savings.Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with operations/divisional management and external customers.Outline full ‘scope-of-project’ such as feasibility, costing/investing and testing with Supply Chain Engineering.Partners with suppliers to create new and unique packaging and processes.Supports technological innovation in equipment, materials, sustainability, processing, and package design including packaging development specifications.Contributes as an effective team player with minimal oversightSupports the establishment and execution of departmental priorities and program strategy efforts with department Director and/or VP.Proficient in timely and accurate data entry and workflows within specification systemsDemonstrates the culture of Tyson RIGHT behaviors (Results, Innovate, Growth Mindset, Humility, and Teamwork).Mentor to the junior members / interns of the Packaging Department.Other duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of both.
Experience: 6 plus years total or 4 plus years in an advanced technical position managing cross-functional teams and packaging suppliers. Previous experience with Fresh and Further Processed packaged meat a plus. Demonstrated ability in product and packaging interactions, sustainability, food protections, and package testing. Understanding in packaging equipment, packaging processes, and working with supply chain engineering on capital projects involving packaging solutions. Proficient in managing/recommending projects that will lead to opportunities in innovation, growth, intellectual property, and profitability.
Computer Skills: Requires intermediate computer skills. For example, well-written emails, effective presentations, spreadsheets with formulas and pivot tables. Familiarity with Cape, Tops, ArtiosCad, CAD, MS Office, Power BI, Specright is preferred.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Strong presentation skills required. Must effectively communicate and build working relationships with all functional and business unit levels from team members on the floor to senior leadership.
Special Skills: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong project management skills. Strong planning and organizational skills.
Travel: 50% - 26+ domestic or international trips per year.

LOCATION: This role will be based onsite at our World Headquarters in Springdale, AR. Relocation assistance available for those who qualify.
