Summary This vacancy is for a WG - 4102-9,Painter - NIE located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION FACILITY KETCHIKAN in KETCHIKAN, Alaska. Responsibilities You will serve as a and be responsible for the preparation, by mechanical and chemical process, and the protective and cosmetic coating of buoys, vessels, structures, and miscellaneous objects. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Preparing metal surfaces for coating by grinding with abrasive disks and wheels. Preparing metal surfaces by pickling or through controlled oxidation; preparing fiber reinforced plastic surfaces by filling, shaping, and abrasive sanding. Preparing masonry surfaces by mechanical and abrasive blasting methods; preparing wood surfaces by filling and sanding. Mixing and applying by brush, roller, air, or airless, spray methods standard coating such as enamels, latex emulsion; varnishes and lacquers, and exotic coatings such as organic and inorganic zinc silicates, polyamide epoxies, and vinyl paints, or otherwise manipulates coatings and applications, where necessary, to obtain special textures which cannot be produced by the coating process itself. Developing coatings of proper color, adjusting hue, intensity and tone to match existing color schemes. Qualifications To qualify for the Electrician, WG-4102-9, applicants must meet the following screen-out job element to be considered for this position: Job Element #1: Ability To Do the Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) to be considered eligible for the position. Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. To meet the screen-out examples of the duties includes: Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc (other than blueprint reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Dexterity and Safety Practices in Construction Structure DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: "Building up, shaping, and leveling surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, obtaining finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone, even out dents and scars by burning-in processes, and treating surfaces with precoating agents. Preparing surfaces by any of the accepted methods and techniques, and ensuring that they meet smoothness, level, and shape requirements. Reading and applying directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, and precoating agents, for example, paint, varnish, epoxy, teflon, paint remover, alkali and phosphate compounds, pickling mixtures, and anti-growth agents. Applying coating materials by any of the accepted methods and devices, check such things as viscosity of coating materials and thickness of coatings on surfaces, and ensure that the match, texture, decorative appearance, level, and thickness meet finish requirements."
