Description:
The main function of a paralegal is to assist lawyers by researching legal precedent investigating facts or preparing legal documents. A typical paralegal is responsible for conducting research to support a legal proceeding formulate a defense or to initiate legal action.
+ Prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses complaints motions responses and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or a paralegal.
+ Review legal journals and assist with legal research.
+ May assist new lawyers how to prepare documents for submission to the courts.
+ Assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment medical and other records.
+ Attend legal meetings such as client interviews hearings or depositions and take notes.
+ Organize and maintain law libraries documents and case files.
+ Prepare and process legal documents and papers such as summonses subpoenas complaints appeals motions and pretrial agreements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
+ Verbal and written communication skills attention to detail customer service and interpersonal skills.
+ Basic ability to work independently and manage ones time.
+ Basic knowledge of laws legal codes court procedures precedents government regulations and the democratic political process.
+ Previous experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word PowerPoint and Excel.
+ Associate's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent training required.
+ 0-2 years experience required.
