Paralegal
The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.
POSITION SUMMARY :
Department of Law Paralegals provide administrative, transactional, litigation and research support to attorneys.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
The primary duties include, but are not limited to:
ยท Assists with case preparation by obtaining additional information or evidence from clients.
ยท Prepares cases for hearings by organizing files, communicating with outside parties including clients and opposing counsel regarding logistics, and preparing exhibits.
ยท Performs legal research in LexisNexis as directed by attorneys including analyzing rules, regulations, case law, and statutory law.
ยท Drafts correspondence and legal documents such as case initiation forms, notices, summons, and certificates of service.
ยท Pulls court documents from dockets; e-files pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents with various Georgia and federal courts through online court systems including PeachCourt, Odyssey, and PACER.
ยท Serves as a reference for rules regarding e-filing in the Office of State Administrative Hearings (OSAH), Superior Courts, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the Georgia Supreme Court.
ยท Proofreads and cite checks legal motions, briefs, and other various pleadings and prepares and updates tables of authorities.
ยท Serves as communication liaison between respondents, attorneys, court personnel, and clients.
ยท Responds to inquiries received from clients and the general public.
ยท Assists with preparing documents in response to Georgia Open Records Act requests.
ยท Organizes and maintains case files including checking case status and noting upcoming deadlines and hearings.
ยท Attends hearings and assists attorneys as necessary, attends client meetings and takes notes.
ยท Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
A Paralegal Certificate, Diploma or Degree AND one year of paralegal experience
OR
an associateโs degree (non-paralegal) AND 2 years of documented paralegal experience; OR
three (3) years of documented paralegal experience AND demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
ยท Certified Paralegal (CP) or Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) certification recognized by the ABA or Georgia State Bar, and three years of paralegal experience
ยท Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
ยท Current commission as a notary public and/or willingness to obtain notary public commission
ยท Strong organizational skills
ยท Strong written and verbal communications skills

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation.
