PARK RANGER Date: Dec 7, 2024 Req ID: 40138 Location: Marianna, AR, US, 72360 Category: DEPT OF PARKS AND TOURISM Anticipated Starting Salary: $37,265.75 Park Ranger Position #: 22078269 Salary: $37,265.75 Grade: GS05 Requisition: 40138 Location: Mississippi River State Park, Marianna, AR Closing date: Until Filled This emergency services/law enforcement position is responsible for ensuring the safety of visitors and protecting the resources of the park by obtaining voluntary compliance with laws and park regulations. Duties include patrolling for possible thefts, illegal hunting and vandalism and other violations, making physical arrests, testifying in court, assisting local agencies, administering first aid, patrolling nearby ADPHT Properties, and other duties as assigned by the Area Sergeant. Job duties also include overseeing search operations and preparing the necessary accident/incident reports as required. The Park Ranger will also perform other duties as assigned. This position is subject to 24-hour call, must be able to traverse rough terrain, work a varied shift including weekends, evenings, and holidays, work in inclement weather and carry a firearm while on duty. A criminal background check is required. Preference given to applicants who have already completed basic law enforcement training. Applicants must meet the following qualifications : The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in park management, outdoor recreation, criminal justice, criminology, or related field, plus completion of A.L.E.T.A (Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy); (or the ability to complete ALETA within 9 Months of the Hire Date) Must possess valid driver’s license and have completed the Arkansas law enforcement certification training in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. OR Two years of college and 300 hours of specialized training in law enforcement; plus two years of experience in a natural resources field, and the completion of A.L.E.T.A. Must possess valid driver’s license and have completed the Arkansas law enforcement certification training in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee. Position Information Class Code: T063C Grade: GS05 FLSA Status: NON-EXEMPT Salary Range: $32,405.00 - $46,987.00 Summary The Park Ranger is responsible for maintaining law and order, providing assistance to park visitors, and assisting in the overall operation of the park. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Functions Patrols park on foot or in automobile monitoring activities, investigating accidents and incidents, issuing citations or making arrests, controlling crowds, directing traffic, securing facilities, checking for safety hazards and repair needs, and assisting park visitors. Leads or participates in search and rescue efforts, which may involve rescuing stranded climbers or boaters and administering emergency first aid to victims of accidents or illness. Assists visitors by explaining park rules, assisting with minor mechanical problems, and searching for lost pets, children, or personal items. Participates in searches and investigations in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies within the park jurisdiction. Trains parks personnel in security measures, search and rescue techniques, and other topics as necessary. Prepares accident/incident reports, lost and found reports, visitor reports, vehicle use reports, and a variety of other reports as required. Inventories and orders supplies, equipment, and resale merchandise and may remove cash from vending machines, closeout registers, make entries in ledgers, prepare bank deposits, and transport funds to local bank for deposit. Performs other duties as assigned. Dimensions May be exposed to personal injury in the performance of duties. Required to carry a firearm. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of law enforcement methods and techniques. Knowledge of geography, points of interest, and principal recreation areas of State. Knowledge of methods of protecting, operating, and maintaining a State park unit. Knowledge of policies, procedures, and rules of State Parks and Recreation Commission. Knowledge of constitutional laws, and laws of arrest and evidence, traffic and foot patrol, Ability to conduct investigations and enforce public safety laws and regulations. Ability to handle weapons, exercise self-defense, and administer first aid. Ability to prepare and present oral and written information, reports, and documents. Minimum Qualifications The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in park management, outdoor recreation, criminal justice, criminology, or related field; or two years of college coursework; plus two years of experience in a natural resources field. Must possess valid driver's license and have completed the Arkansas law enforcement certification training in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
