Summary

About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Recreation Intern in the Parks & Recreation department. Applicants will be working directly with diverse populations ranging from young toddlers to older adults in all areas of the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department. As a department intern, you will have the chance to learn about and gain experience in all areas related to managing a municipal parks and recreation program. As an intern, you will experience the three divisions of the department: Asset Management, Business Resource Management and Recreation Management.

+ Applying information and skills obtained in the classroom to real-life working situations.
+ Program planning & development.
+ Acts as leader in group or individual games.
+ Prepare program and recreation equipment for use.
+ Supervises and/or participates in recreational activities.
+ Attends regular staff meetings and collaborates with other leaders.
+ Planning and implementing special events.
+ Rotate through the three divisions of the department gaining experience in recreation management, asset management and resource management.
+ The intern will be required to complete a special project. The project will be introduced at the beginning of the internship and due at a specified date at the end of the internship.

+ Strong leadership skills and ability to model mature behavior to participants.
+ Ability to facilitate activities/games for youth/teens.
+ Knowledge of the most up to date trends and practices in parks and recreation.
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
+ All candidates must be currently enrolled in a four-year college or university Major in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Parks and Recreation Management, Leisure Services, or a related field and must be able to earn course credit for the internship. All necessary requirements must be met with the respective college or university to be eligible.
+ Required and must be willing to take and be able to pass City provided Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certification class. Unless currently certified.
+ Experience with Google Suite and related software programs
+ Must successfully complete a background screening
+ Ability to get to various program sites located throughout the City of Asheville for your workday. This program does not have a singular meeting spot.
+ Ability to drive program vehicles. Must have a current NC or out-of-state driver's license and be 18 years or older.
Other things to know:
+ Required staff training held June 2-6, 2024 with varied hours.
+ This internship is 10 weeks, 40 hours per week (which may include nights and weekends), resulting in 400 total working hours.
+ Hours are generally Monday - Friday between 8:00 am-6:00 pm, some evenings and weekends. Work schedule of 40 hours per week consists of shifts. Examples of shifts include - Marketing Team 9:00 AM to 5:00pm, Summer Camp Programs between 9:00am -6:00 PM, Asset Crew Work from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM; Community Center evening shifts may be 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM; weekend shifts include half or full day programs or events.

+ The City of Asheville does not offer housing for interns.

+ Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (5-50 pounds). Must be able to walk 3-5 miles on sometimes steep, slippery or uneven terrain
Sensory Requirements:
+ Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings.
+ Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors:
+ Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
+ Some shifts may require prolonged exposure to outdoor working environments.
