Part-Time Communications Technician

JOB SUMMARY\n

Communications Technicians shall be responsible for the operation of the transit communication center. These duties include, but are not limited to, receiving and transmitting messages via radio, telephone and teletype, receiving emergency calls for service and dispatching calls for service.\n

QUALIFICATIONS\n

Education and Experience:\n

High school diploma, GED or equivalent. Must be 18 years or older. Minimum of one year experience as transit service dispatcher or scheduler. \n

Special Requirements:\n\nMust possess a valid class \"C\" Texas Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement.\n\n

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: \n\nKnowledge of basic computer skills.\nSkill in customer service\/relations.\nApplicants must have effective verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, using the English language.\nAbility to work different shifts and respond to work on short notice when emergency situations arise.\nAbility to listen, comprehend and apply information received simultaneously.\nAbility to demonstrate multi-tasking skills and to handle stressful situations is a necessity.\nAbility to attend in-service training courses as required.\nAbility to teach new employees when required.\nAbility to report for duty at the scheduled time when called in.\nAbility to follow established guidelines\/policies, understand and apply rules of confidentiality.\nAbility to work extended periods of time in a smoke free workplace.\n\n

PHYSICAL DEMANDS\n

The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and\/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, crouching, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, talking and walking.\n

Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment. This position is considered safety-sensitive, as defined by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA); thus, it is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and all other types of substance abuse tests as described in the policy. Upon offer of employment, must successfully pass the DOT CDL physical exam and maintain a physical condition, as monitored by periodic CDL re-examinations, which allows completion of all assigned duties. A motor vehicle record check will be required.
