UCLA’s Teacher Education Program (TEP) prepares aspiring teachers to become social justice educators in urban settings. The program is designed for future educators who want to serve in historically marginalized communities in Los Angeles.
SUMMARY OF POSITIONThe Department of Education at UCLA seeks applications for part-time lecturer(s) to teach within the TEP graduate program. UCLA TEP offers several pathways that culminate in a teaching credential and a Master of Education degree. We are guided by an anti-racist and social justice agenda in our commitment, partnerships, and coursework.
Course(s) include the following, and the lecturer may also be assigned additional courses according to the instructional needs in the department and in conformity with departmental lecturer workload policies:
• EDU 427C, Individualized Education - Introduction to Special Education: Collaboration with Families/Caregivers and Support Services: In fostering an inclusive philosophy and approach, graduate students in the Education Specialist credential pathway will explore ways to effectively collaborate with various service providers to support, teach, and include students with disabilities. Students will examine research-based strategies to enable them to collaborate with the families of students with disabilities and any associated stakeholders (i.e., outside agencies/service providers). Credential candidates will be exposed to and guided in using data collection tools to develop IEP goals and how and when to employ certain instructional strategies and assessments.
• EDU 320B, Secondary Science and Literacy Methods: ED320B is a course designed to prepare prospective teachers to gain pedagogical skills for Science in a single-subject assignment in urban schools. ED320B seeks to prepare pre-service teachers to 1) demonstrate knowledge of and ability to teach science content aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and applicable Common Core State Standards and English language development standards, 2) teach English language and develop literacy in science, 3) teach inquiry-based critically relevant lessons that involve data collection and analysis, and lastly, 4) teach social norms and routines to create and maintain classroom ecology that support inclusive, productive, safe, and critical learning environment.
• EDU 318A, Integrated Methods for Elementary Teachers (Science): Examination and development of instructional programs and the analyses and practices of instructional methods for teaching K-6 content. Emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach integrating content areas and infusing literacy, technology, and strategies for second language learners. EDU 318A focuses on K-6 Science instruction. Goals for the class, including: 1)Develop detailed knowledge about the development of children’s scientific thinking, 2) Develop a repertoire of pedagogical moves and tools that support the development of scientific understanding, and 3) Develop notions of equity and access inside and outside of the science classroom.
• EDU 427D, Individualized Education – Assessments Individualized Education: Assessments explores the implementation and further development of assessment tools, data collection tools, and instructional strategies to use data to make informed instructional decisions via classroom instruction and/or in an Individualized Education Plan while keeping the student’s well-being at the forefront of all decision-making processes. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate various perspectives on formal and informal assessment tools to support critical decisions that need to be made when educating students with exceptionalities. This information will serve as data for progress monitoring with both IEP goals and to support teacher instruction.
Responsibilities will include lecturing, conducting regularly scheduled office hours, and the writing and grading of assignments and exams. Other responsibilities will include attending regularly TEP faculty meetings and collaborating with other instructors to enhance the program’s vision.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS• A MA degree in Education in required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS• Doctorate degree in Education is highly preferred.
SALARY RANGEThe posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 15. The salary range for this position is $68,247 - $74,576.
