Department Summary:

The Transportation Infrastructure Evolution department specializes in enhancing the National Airspace System (NAS) operations by leveraging its extensive expertise in avionics, wireless communications, navigation systems, and surveillance applications. The department aims to be the leading resource for avionics capabilities and focuses on developing advanced concepts for communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) evolution, simulating system interactions for improved air traffic management and resilience planning and establishing standards for emerging technologies and solutions for aviation new entrants, such as uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM) users. Through strategic forecasting, modeling & simulation, proof-of-concepts, and outreach, this department positions itself as a leader in advancing aviation infrastructure and safety.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Support feasibility studies with focus on wireless communications, electromagnetic spectrum systems (EMS) engineering, and spectrum managementSupport implementation of technical solutions, research emerging technologiesSupport radio-frequency system performance assessments using modeling, simulation and testing techniques.Support economic analyses, including estimating implementation costs, spectrum valuation effortsUse laboratory instrumentation to characterize communications systems, implement test scenarios, perform tests and evaluations, conduct experiments.

Basic Qualifications:

Rising college junior or senior enrolled full-time pursuing an accredited degree seeking program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related degree program and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internshipBasic knowledge of electromagnetic spectrum, wireless communications technologies, RF systems, and spectrum sharing solutions.Familiarity with modern programming languages and modeling tools, simulation tools, cloud environments.Ability to code and analyze data, implement modeling and simulation of spectrum-based systems to assess technical performance and interference issues, designing and conducting studies and analyzing what-if scenarios.Ability to perform economic analysis related to spectrum systems implementation and repurposingSustained excellence in academic performance

Preferred Qualifications:

Past research experience in one or more of the areas of responsibilityExperience in RF Engineering, signal processing, propagation analysis, and RF testing.Technical understanding of mechanisms and trade-offs of key 5G capabilities such as massive MIMO, beamforming, network slicing, operations in new spectrum bands, Radio Access Network (RAN) architectures, Open-RAN architectures, Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC), multi-access edge computing (MEC).Proficiency with modern programming languages and modeling tools, simulation tools, cloud environments.Ability to use laboratory instrumentation to characterize communications systems and perform tests and experiments.Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.Demonstrated interest in serving the publi
