Partnership Tax Specialist

Nelnet is a corporate taxpayer with a growing and complex group of partnership investments, including real estate, renewable energy, infrastructure, and venture capital. As this portfolio grows, Nelnet assumes more tax reporting responsibilities, and Nelnet’s renewable energy syndication platform becomes more robust, the company needs a tax specialist that can manage complex partnership tax principles, planning, compliance, and related reporting.

This position will be integral in assisting to draft operating agreements, managing the hypothetical book liquidation at value method used for financial statements, ensuring propriety of tax compliance relative to these investments, reviewing partnership benefit schedules and related calculations, and reporting tax disclosures to investors and all federal and state taxing authorities. This position will closely partner with Nelnet Tax Credit Services Controller and the Executive Director of Tax and Renewable Energy, Nelnet’s real estate and venture capital teams, other tax professionals within and outside Nelnet, co-investors, and other finance professionals within Nelnet Tax Credit Services.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Prepare and/or review the after-tax benefit schedule associated with various partnership investments (renewable energy, real estate, infrastructure, etc)
2.    Oversee and review the preparation of hypothetical liquidation book value calculations for Nelnet and co-investor financial statements
3.   Manage tax compliance and planning associated with Nelnet’s partnership investments including tax return review, correspondence with various external tax preparers, and assigning staff for internal tax return preparation
4.    Partner with Nelnet’s tax department and its renewable energy department to provide relevant information and optimize their workflows to comply with co-investor and regulatory deadlines

5. Prepare quarterly tax estimates of anticipated tax credits and flow through income/loss for internal and external reporting

6.    Manage the complex calculations associated with various federal credits, book capital accounts, inside and outside tax basis, tax attribute carryforwards, etc
7.    Participate in the due diligence phase of an investment prior to close to manage risks, provide tax modeling and operating agreement review, maximize profitability, and establish the mechanics for managing the investment post-close.

8. Review and maintenance of capital accounts including analyzing accounts for year ending fundings and deficit restoration obligations

9. Review and maintenance of book to tax differences related to Nelnet’s partnership investments

**Pay Range for this position -$75,000 - $120,000k


EDUCATION:  
Bachelors Degree required in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in Partnership Taxation.  Certified Public Accountant (CPA)-Preferred

EXPERIENCE:  
2+ years of tax compliance and return preparation experience in a public accounting firm. Expertise in partnership taxation and/or renewable energy tax credit investment experience is preferred.

8.    Strong experience with structuring transactions and proficient in partnership taxation.

10.    Strong/confident communication style:  Effectively communicates with and engages all levels of the organization from peers to executive management both verbally and in writing.  Displays confidence in expressing opinions and in offering a point of view.  Strong interpersonal skills.
