Position Summary:  JMT is seeking a Party Chief- Field Surveys to join their Team in Asheville, North Carolina. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing surveying and mapping duties, usually under the direction of an engineer, surveyor, cartographer, or photogrammetrist to obtain data used for construction, map making, boundary location, mining, or other purposes. They may assist with calculations for map making information and assist in creating maps from source data, such as surveying notes, aerial photography, satellite data, or other maps to show topographical features, political boundaries, and other features. They also may verify accuracy and completeness of topographical maps. This position works closely with project engineers creating plans for the construction of various types of transportation and civil/site projects including, but not limited to, the following: roadways, bridges, parks, commercial and private developments. The position will also be required to work closely with land survey crews in the preparation of topographic and boundary surveys as well as construction stake-out and as-built surveys. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Provide data relevant to the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features Compile geographic, political, and cultural information and prepare maps of large areas; record the results of surveys, verify the accuracy of data, and assist with the preparation of plots, maps, and reports Collect data in the field and calculate mapmaking information for use in performing computations and computer-aided drafting  Research legal records, look for evidence of previous boundaries, and assist with the analysis of the data to determine the location of boundary lines Understand the use of Robotic Total Stations, Global Positioning System (GPS), Data Collectors, laptops, and computer software for surveying  Accompanies and oversees work of field crews, conducting complete assignments or portions of a large and diverse project while organizing field operations and collecting data to ensure efficacy and accuracy Reviews project specifications and confers with engineer and surveyor concerning assistance required such as plan preparation, acceptance testing, and evaluation of field conditions, design changes, and reports  Performs non-routine assignments involving substantial variety and complexity Performs surveying duties not requiring licensure  Computes volumes and prepares graphs Performs supervisory responsibilities on a job specific basis
