Pathologist

HNL Lab Medicine is seeking a surgical pathologist to join our growing Anatomic Pathology Department of 30+ pathologists. HNL Lab Medicine provides laboratory services to Lehigh Valley Health Network as well as surgery centers and outpatient physician practices and clinics in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The successful candidate looks forward to working collaboratively with colleagues and is excited to utilize innovations in digital pathology.  Applicants should possess strong general surgical pathology skills. Fellowship training or equivalent expertise in GU Pathology, head and neck/thyroid pathology or GI/liver pathology is highly desirable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include, but are not limited to, the
following:
1. Assures correct accessioning and numbering of all surgical specimens.
2. Identifies specimens and abnormalities and determines appropriate sectioning
technique.
3. Dissects, evaluates, and processes specimens and dictates gross descriptions
according to standard operating procedures.
4. Examines histologic samples from biopsies, surgical specimens, fine needle
aspirations, and cytology smears to identify diseases or other abnormalities.
5. Diagnoses diseases and/or studies medical conditions using techniques such as gross
pathology, frozen section analysis, histology, cytology, cytopathology, molecular,
pathology and cytogenetics.
6. Requests additional studies as necessary to formulate a diagnosis such as
histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, FISH, flow and molecular studies.
7. Performs rapid interpretations, routine or emergent, as needed including staining and
aliquoting of the specimen for special studies including intraoperative consultations.
8. Writes pathology reports summarizing analyses, results, and conclusions.
Communicates pathologic findings to surgeons and/or other physicians. Participates
in Tumor Boards as needed.
9. Consults with physicians about ordering and interpreting tests or providing
treatments.
10. Plans and oversees the work of the pathology staff, pathology assistants, pathology
laboratory assistants, pathology surgical grossing technicians, cytotechnologists,
histotechnologists, students, residents, and fellows.
11. Meets institutional, licensure and maintains CME requirements in order to remain
current in designated pathology discipline.
12. Engages in educational and research activities to stay abreast of developments in the
practice of pathology.
13. Participates in quality improvement programs with the goals of enhancing patient
safety, ensuring timely delivery of reports, and monitoring physician competence.
Continually meets all proficiency standards of QI programs.
14. Maintains adequate malpractice insurance and tail coverage.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

Education/Experience:
M.D. or D.O. degree with successful licensure through the completion of the
United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or its equivalency. A
minimum of 2-5 years relevant scientific experience in the application of
scientific principles, concepts, and techniques in the designated discipline,
preferably in an accredited laboratory. It will be expected that if not currently
Board certified the individual will be Board eligible and seek appropriate Board
Certification(s) in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Anatomic Pathology and Clinical
Pathology (AP/CP). Working knowledge of State and Federal regulations
governing laboratories.
