40Gundersen Health System is looking to add a fulltime Pathologists' Assistant to our growing Pathology team.
What You'll Do:
The Pathologists' Assistant performs gross description and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens, including selection and submission of sections for histological, microbiological, immunological, and other specialized testing.
Primary Responsibilities:
Performs complete dissection at the gross level for all types of surgical pathology specimens, with an accurate and appropriate description of findings dictated for the surgical pathology report
Selects and submits appropriate tissue specimens for other special procedures, including frozen section examination, touch preparations, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, cytogenetics, and microbiology
Photograph gross pathology specimens, both as directed by the pathologist or other physician, and also in a self-directed manner. Recognizes the medicolegal and educational value of photographing certain specimens
Utilizes multiple information systems to obtain and summarize patients' pathology records, cytology reports, laboratory test results, radiology reports, and clinical histories
Collects, reviews, and summarizes data for departmental quality assurance efforts, including but not limited to the following topics: completeness of surgical pathology and autopsy reports; accuracy of SNOMED and CPT coding; correlation of frozen section with permanent section diagnoses; and correlation of outside diagnoses with in-house diagnoses
Serves as an educator; teaches residents and students rotating through pathology, presents autopsies at the monthly clinical pathology conference and allows job shadowing as time permits
What's Available:
Fulltime days - 80 hours biweekly (1.0 FTE)
Starting salary of $82,763 and up, based on your years of experience
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in a related field. A master's degree in Pathologists' Assistants' Program is highly preferred.
Pathologists' Assistant Certification (PA) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required at hire or with a Master's degree within one year of hire date
Strong knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures, specimen processing, and analysis
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology
Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues
