They assist in the preparation, examination, and dissection of surgical specimens, as well as the performance of postmortem examinations. PAs play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of pathology services in a hospital, academic, or private laboratory setting. Qualifications: Required: + Master s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists Assistant program. Certification as a Pathologists Assistant (PA) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP-PA) or eligibility to sit for the exam. Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in surgical pathology or autopsy pathology preferred. Strong understanding of gross anatomy, histology, pathology procedures, and medical terminology. Technical proficiency in using laboratory equipment, including dictation systems and digital imaging systems. Knowledge of laboratory regulations and accreditation standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, and OSHA). Ability to work independently and make professional judgments while maintaining high accuracy and efficiency. Scheduling Requirements: + Full Time + Day Shift Essential Functions: Surgical Pathology Duties: Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, ensuring proper description and selection of appropriate sections for histologic examination. Describe and dictate macroscopic findings, using standardized terminology and documentation systems. Ensure proper fixation and processing of specimens according to laboratory protocols. Photograph specimens for documentation and educational purposes. Maintain accurate records of all specimen dissections and procedures. Autopsy Duties: Assist in or perform postmortem examinations under the supervision of a pathologist. Eviscerate and dissect organs, following proper protocols for examination. Collect toxicology, microbiology, and histology specimens as required. Document autopsy findings and assist in the preparation of autopsy reports. Ensure proper handling, labeling, and storage of tissues and body fluids. Administrative & Laboratory Responsibilities: Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional regulations for specimen handling and processing. Maintain grossing stations, autopsy suites, and equipment in a clean and organized manner. Assist in quality control and quality assurance programs. Ensure adherence to laboratory safety protocols and infection control procedures. Skills and Competencies: Attention to detail and strong analytical skills to ensure accuracy in specimen processing. Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and clinicians. Time management and ability to work efficiently under pressure in a high-volume laboratory. Technical proficiency with laboratory equipment, LIS (Laboratory Information Systems), and digital pathology platforms. Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow ethical guidelines in handling patient information. Work Environment: Hospital laboratories, academic institutions, private pathology groups, or forensic pathology offices. Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, and infectious diseases.
