Pathologists Assistant
Community Health Systems
Under the direction of the pathologist, the Pathologist’s Assistant is responsible for independently performing or assisting in accessioning, dissection, description, & histologic sampling of a full range of surgical specimens. The position requires intimate knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory, or visual fashion is essential. Special Characteristics: Ability to direct& dissections, and ability to establish & maintain friendly, cooperative relations with surgical staff, pathology staff, residents and secretaries.
**Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
1. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or related science.
2. Understand safety rules and regulations, management techniques, laws and the legal interpretations, which influence the practice of Medical Technology within the Laboratory and Pathology Department.
3. Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical terminology and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect, and describe certain surgical specimens. Knowledge of dissection, sectioning techniques and appropriate procedure of handling tissue. Demonstrated job knowledge of histopathologic techniques and methods.
4. Knowledgeable of methods used to obtain clinical history including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc. when indicated.
5. Familiarity with dictation and dictation equipment and computer are beneficial.
**Required Length and Type of Experience**
1. Minimum two (2) years clinical experience
2. One (1) year experience as a surgical pathology technician to include gross examination of tissue.
3. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements concerning chemical hygiene and blood-borne pathogens.
**Required Licensure, Certification or Registry**
1. Completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologist’s Assistant education program
2. Current certification as PA (ASCP)
