Job Description

The Pathology Medical Secretary role works directly with patient records using the electronic health records (EHR) system. Responsibilities include reviewing and editing medical and grammatical terminology of patient reports ensuring accuracy and completeness, and performing all pathology administrative duties. This role uses anatomic and laboratory computer application systems to create pathology cases, enter and maintain information on the case, perform slide maintenance including transport to other locations, and identify and assign appropriate ICD10 codes for pathology billing. The role reports directly to the Laboratory Business Operations Manager.

Experience

2 years’ experience in administrative role

Preferred Qualifications

Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervisionThorough knowledge of Medical Terminology including body parts and surgical procedures  Excellent written and oral communication skillsICD10 Pathology coding knowledge  Knowledge of Epic, Beaker, Sunquest computer applications preferredPrior medical secretary/transcriptionist experience or completion of medical administrative assistant/secretary program

Job Responsibilities

Retrieves, compiles and enters data to be included in report templates, readying the case for pathologist review.Review pathology reports and assign ICD-10 codes for all Pathology diagnoses to ensure accurate billing. Files and retrieves reports, slides and blocks.Facilitates retrieval of pathology material at the request of pathologists to assist in diagnosis, second opinion consultations and/or continued care and treatment both within Children’s Healthcare or to other healthcare systems while maintaining HIPAA compliance in all aspects of incoming requests/inquiries.Prepares laboratory slides, blocks and reports for transport for consults and assures return of same when consult is completed.  Field customer service-related duties with respect to Anatomic Pathology/laboratory inquiries; maintenance of all office files/records and system documentation according to department policy.Answers telephones, takes messages accurately, screens calls, and directs calls to appropriate personnel.Coordinates/schedules meetings and conferences.
