Pathology Support Associate - Laboratory
Job Description MAIN FUNCTION: The Pathology Support Associate (PSA) is responsible for working in a self-directed manner to complete a wide variety of daily, weekly, and monthly tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the department, the rendering of patient care, and the compliance of the department with regulating agencies. Under the direction of the Pathologists, the Systems Director of Laboratory Services and/or the department supervisor, the secretary provides support for day to day activities, special projects, audits, other non-routine departmental assignments and quality assurance activities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ** 1. Works independently to accurately register patients and order testing. ** 2. Enters surgical pathology reports into appropriate medical software application, to include transcription. + Greets and provides assistance to providers, other employees, patients and other third parties, entering or contacting the department, which includes providing copies of reports, delivery of slides and of tissue blocks, or other requests. Organizes and prioritizes workload. + Is responsible for bringing unusual situations to the attention of the Medical Director(s) and/or Pathologist and/or the Systems Director of Laboratory Services.Provides clerical support (answering phones, processing mail, faxing, etc.) for the Pathology medical staff, to include receptionist and typing duties and disposition of mail. ** 5. Utilizes all computer systems and programs necessary to perform assigned tasks. + Performs quality checks on all typing and registration activities. Proofreads gross descriptions and other sections of pathology reports to ensure accuracy. + Is responsible for the timely and accurate manual entry of all pathology billing. ** 8. Compiles data as required by regulation or as necessary to maintain departmental operations. Gathers and organizes data for QA activities, including assisting the pathologists with preparation for Tumor Board. Ensures that copies of results, reports and/or specimens are sent to the appropriate physician, location, and/or laboratory. ** 9. Packages and ships paraffin blocks and glass slides for consultation purposes. Maintains certified packer status. + Maintains logs of all cases, slides, and blocks sent out for consultation. Ensures that all slides/blocks sent out are returned. + Provides support for any existing ArnotHealth contracts with outside agencies (i.e., Chemung County Coroner), as per the details of the contract. May perform coroner duties in accordance with federal, state, and county requirements. + Is familiar with and maintains all regulations, policies, and procedures appropriate to assigned duties. + Prepares for unannounced inspections by staff, local, state, and/or federal regulatory agencies. + Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position. + Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Arnot Health. + It is understood that this job description lists typical duties for the classification and is not to considered inclusive of all duties, which may be assigned. EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent, required. Medical secretarial course covering transcription and medical terminology preferred. EXPERIENCE: Prior training and/or work experience in health care or data processing required. Education and/or training in keyboarding, transcription, and highly complex medical terminology is preferred. SKILLS: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills. Ability to manage various concurrent priorities. CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS: No CPR required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Light physical effort. Typical office job.
