Purpose:
Functions under the general direction of department leadership in Patient Access. Coordinates patient access for all phases of the revenue cycle from scheduling and registration up to and including referral and denial management.
Responsibilities:
The PAS Representative works directly with medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, insurance carriers, and other external professionals to assist patients in obtaining health care and financial services. Reporting to the Manager/Supervisor, this position is responsible for completing the registration and insurance eligibility processes with Patient Access Services and creating the first impression of the Hospital’s services to patients, family members, and other external customers. Additional responsibilities include interviewing patients/guarantors to obtain demographic and confidential clinical and financial information necessary to appropriately schedule, register, obtain treatment authorizations, and verify insurance eligibility and corresponding benefit levels. The Patient Access Services (PAS) Representative must have a working knowledge of the managed care environment, third-party reimbursement, hospital and community services, and hospital and healthcare policies. All information is entered into the Hospital’s computer system to expedite data collection, billing, and Hospital reimbursement. Critical to this position is the ability to gather and record all appropriate information that lays the groundwork for the remaining or future fiscal efforts of the Hospital Also works as a team member and positively accepts change throughout the Hospital. Critical to this position is understanding the revenue cycle and the importance of evaluating and securing all appropriate financial resources for patients to maximize reimbursement to the Hospital. The PAS Representative must be capable of articulating information in a manner that patients, guarantors, and family members know what to expect and what their financial responsibilities will ultimately be.
