Position Purpose 

Functions as a member of the health care team under the direction of the RN. Utilizing a Patient Focused Care approach, provides sitting services to a specific group of patients within the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland System. Actively supports and participates in the activities of the unit based Shared Governance Council. Promotes organizational commitment to customer service. 

Duties/Responsibilities 

Performs activities of daily living (ADLs) appropriate to the patient's condition, according to unit routine under direction of the RN. This would include physical care such as bathing, turning, ambulating patients and toileting. 

 Provides basic nutritional support to patients such as tray passing, tray setup, assistance with feeding, and communication of intake to RN.  

Demonstrates principles of Relationship-based Care to cultivate and maintain therapeutic relationship as a means to optimal healing and collegial functioning as an interdisciplinary care team member.  

Provides observation following the guidelines as described during department specific orientation. Must ensure they are actively participating in a distraction free environment.  

Reports patient care incidents and changes in the patient's condition to the RN in a timely fashion.  

Creates a neat and clean environment for optimal patient care experience.  

To ensure safe patient care experience, incumbent must remain with patient until hand-off occurs. Seeks and incorporates feedback concerning improvement in one's own practice, including participation in self-appraisal. 

Provides patient care that reflects respect for patient's rights, dignity, values, culture preferences, and expressed needs and attention to providing comfort, relieving pain, and alleviating anxiety.  

Takes personal accountability to seek out experiences in order to maintain skills and competence. 

Integrates principles of the Personal.Connected.Journey and demonstrates Trinity Health Guiding Behaviors, to provide excellent care of self, patients, and care team members.  

Performs other duties as assigned and needed. Additional duties may include non-clinical duties consistent with meeting the needs of the patient and care team.

In accordance with unit or departmental practice, determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient, encounter, date/time of service, with any required modifiers. 

Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice.  

In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.  

In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.  

In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift 

Minimum Qualifications 

. Education • High school diploma, GED or equivalent. 

Working Conditions 

Working in the patient care environment may result in exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances. 

Position may require frequent lifting and carrying of patients/equipment/other not to exceed 51 pounds. Associates will not lift items/patients exceeding 35 pounds from the floor. 

Associate’s position requires occasional (5-10% of work time) squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing, frequent bending/stooping, and reaching above shoulder level, pushing/pulling.  

May be working in an environment dimly lit, sitting for periods up to 100% of shift.  

Position requires the use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating
