Patient Care Technician - PACU

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the PACU!
This position is full-time, Monday- Friday 10:30am-7pm, with no weekends or holidays.
One year of previous patient care experience required.
_Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience._
Overview: This position will work in the Surgical Family Waiting area checking patients and families in for their procedure, place patients in consult rooms for the physician, and work in PREOP/PACU as needed to care for patients after receiving surgery.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Provides patient care, assists with procedures and activities of daily living, physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
+ Provides feedback to RN, reports changes in patient status.
+ Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least four BU identified tasks (phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal).
+ Reports equipment malfunctions, establishes effective communication with other departments, maintains professional and respectful relationships.
+ Contributes to unit activities (responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
+ Receives feedback constructively, identifies and communicates learning needs, takes action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance, requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities, participates in self-review.
+ Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction, may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per protocol.
+ Communicates clearly and effectively with healthcare team, understands cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions, supports workplace safety.
+ Develops and maintains productive working relationships, adheres to policies and procedures, complies with safety policies including standard precautions.
+ Suggests and supports changes within the department, assumes responsibility for assignments, views problems as challenges, supports department projects and quality initiatives.
+ Documents in medical records, performs assigned work timely and productively, completes clerical functions as needed.
+ Routinely performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning patients), point of care testing (blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, specimen collections.
+ Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors, performs other duties as assigned.
+ Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills based on department need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tubes clamping and removal.
+ Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ Must have either:
+ 1 year of general healthcare experience, OR
+ 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR
+ Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
+ Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
+ Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class. Successful completion of basic information system training.
+ Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
+ Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
+ Act 33 with renewal
+ Act 34 with renewal
+ Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
+ ACLS preferred
