Patient Care Technician / PCT ER

Your team is bigger than your department: Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center is a 128-bed, full-service, acute-care community hospital with a new emergency department, a state-of-the-art maternity center, a women's imaging center, and an ICU. Responsibilities Welcome patients and check for proper identification bracelets. Assist the patient to undress as needed preparing the patient for assessment, admission, physical examination and/or procedures. Draw intravenous or capillary blood from patients, assuring appropriate labeling and processing of specimens to expedite throughput. Label specimens in the presence of the patient. Take and record vital signs of patients on admission and as indicated by the professional nurse. Document vital signs accordingly on appropriate flow sheets, notify the RN of results. Place EMT backboards and other equipment in the appropriate storage place. Perform EKGs on patients complaining of chest pain within 10 minutes of arrival. Perform other EKGs are requested by the physician or professional nurse. Perform and document glucose finger sticks and collect other specimens as directed; promptly forward specimens to the lab for processing to avoid delays in throughput. Obtain and document patient weights as requested. Assure the presence, functionality and cleanliness of all ED equipment. Assist in the transport of patient to departments or units upon request. Routinely check inventory of assigned area and restock as necessary, inclusive of code carts. Assist with the preparation as necessary assuring the patient is assisted with meals as necessary. Ensure that the room environment is prepared for admissions; clean and remake stretchers after patient use, prepare stretchers and general area for next patient. Assist in answering any call lights or patient requests promptly and communicating to the RN any changes in the patient condition. During “downtime” take the initiative to assure patient needs are met, evaluate supply needs and restock as necessary. Complete all required education and/or in-services within the timeframe established; attend staff meetings. Lift a minimum of 5 lbs., push and pull a minimum of 10 lbs. and stand a minimum of 6 hours a day. Adhere to the standards identified in the hospital’s organizational competencies. Qualifications Job Requirements Minimum 6 months in an acute care hospital setting Prior experience in performing EKG and phlebotomy procedures Maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification Preferred Job Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent Patient care or EKG and phlebotomy certificate Cardiac Credentialing International Certification
