Patient Companion - Med/Surg
Our Mentor Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility offering Lake County residents enhanced access to Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s top healthcare systems. With 4 operating rooms, 34 inpatient care rooms, and a helipad, we are making it easier than ever for our Lake County patients to access high-quality care close to home. Caregivers on Mentor Hospital’s Med/Surg Unit provide care to adult patients with a variety of medical issues or patients preparing for or recovering from surgery. Med/surg caregivers care for a broad spectrum of patients, giving them a vast and broad clinical skillset.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 6:30am – 7:00pm or 6:30pm – 7:00am.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.
Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers, ambulation.
Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
A high school diploma or GED.
Completion of a hospital based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Heartsaver level of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire.
Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs.

Physical Requirements:
Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
