We are seeking a Patient Safety Specialist (PSS) to assist and advise the Government with the establishment and operation of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Patient Safety Program (PSP) at the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) level.

 

This position is based at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA.

Assist with planning, developing, implementing, and coordinating a facility-based PSP that supports and advances DHA safety and reliability objectives in accordance with Defense Health Agency Procedures Manual (DHA-PM) 6025.13, Volume 2.Serve as the Patient Safety (PS) Subject Matter Expert (SME) resource in the MTF and provide advice to all levels of personnel to ensure proper implementation of the PSP.Conduct an annual appraisal of organization-wide PS activities, training status, policies, and procedures at the MTF level.Collaborate with facility functions on items/issues related to patient safety event prevention, risk identification, risk assessment, and risk control.Report MTF PS events according to DHA-PM 6025.13, Volume 2.Collect, collate, analyze, and provide data from facility event reviews, Comprehensive Systematic Analyses (CSA), Proactive Risk Assessments (PRA), and other sources via a variety of communication forums. Make recommendations and disseminate information to appropriate facility committees and individuals for PS improvement purposes.Collaborate with the facility Risk Manager on event analysis. Review Potentially Compensable Event (PCE) cases for potential PS concerns.Assist the facility with Process Improvement (PI) activities in support of the organizational safety and quality goals as it relates to patient safety. Collaborate with the PI Manager on the use of analytical tools (e.g., flowcharting and statistical process control) in PS activities.At the MTF level, provide ongoing PS education to include new employee orientation, workplace-based refresher training, in-service training on key PS topics, and one-on-one consultations.Assist with facility-wide implementation of healthcare team training to foster effective teamwork.Prepare a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)/PRA every 18 months and assist MTF staff in the performance of PI projects as it relates to PS.Assist Government personnel with implementing and monitoring The Joint Commission (TJC) National Patient Safety Goals within the MTF. Education, Requirements and Qualifications US citizenship or US permanent residency with the ability to obtain and maintain Facility Access required.Bachelor’s Degree in a nursing or healthcare-related field, Master’s Degree is highly desired.Four (4) years of experience in healthcare or PS-related field, or equivalent. Experience in civilian inpatient or outpatient medical facility is required. Military experience is highly desired.Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.The ability to work, organize time, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.The ability to pay attention to detail and effectively communicate patient safety concepts to leadership.Experience with patient safety aspects of healthcare accreditation (TJC) preferred.Experience performing CSAs, typically a Root Cause Analysis or similar methodology.Experience performing PRAs, typically a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) or similar methodology.Knowledge in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to a broad range of functional areas in quality/performance improvement practices is highly desirable.Baccalaureate level skills in written and oral communications, public speaking and fostering positive interpersonal relationships.Experience with Root Cause Analysis Tools, Proactive Risk Assessment Tools

Full salary range for this position is: $80,000-$90,000 per year with the starting salary determined based on candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, and education, in addition to budget availability.
