Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Patient Services Aide (PSA) is responsible for ensuring the timely set up of the birthing rooms and operating rooms in the Birthing and Surgical Services Programs after each delivery in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures. The PSA liaises closely with the Lead Hand/ PSA and receives work direction according to the activities of the assigned area. The PSA maintains an inventory of clean supplies, instruments, and equipment. The PSA participates as a member of the inter-professional care team, relates effectively to others, and works respectfully and collaboratively with others. This position reports to the Program Coordinator.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Changes, cleans and remakes rooms in the Birthing and Surgical Services Programs.

2.    Restocks medical/surgical supplies and equipment in the Birthing and Surgical Services Programs. Reports any concerns to Lead hand/ Charge Nurse/ Clinical Nurse Leader/ Program Coordinator.

3.    Cleans, disinfects and restocks Anaesthetic machine and cart in OR area with necessary supplies and equipment. Reports any concerns to Anaesthesia technologist.

4.    Cleans instruments by rinsing/identifying and placing on an open tray for return to Sterile Processing Department. Reports any missing instruments to OR Charge Nurse. Sterilizes instruments by operating the autoclave as per established procedure.

5.    Cleans, disinfects, and restocks supplies as required in various equipment, such as First Hours Of Life (FHOL) beds and Fetal monitors, and patient care areas including maternal, newborn, delivery carts and Anaesthesia carts.

6.    Cleans, disinfects and stores specialized equipment as per established procedures.

7.    Maintains equipment in a clean and safe condition and reports damaged or inoperable equipment, fixtures, or furniture to appropriate person.

8.    Cleans and disinfects areas such as walls, ceilings, carpets, floors and windows by dusting, wiping, damp mopping, spot washing, vacuuming, shampooing, waxing, buffing and polishing.

9.    Cleans and disinfects all bathroom fixtures including toilets, tubs, showers and sinks.

10.    Empties, cleans and disinfects waste containers and removes garbage from room as well as emptying and disposing of linen bags as per established procedures.

11.    Picks up and delivers supplies as necessary.
  
12.    Moves furniture and transports equipment as necessary, manually or by using an aid such as dollies or carts.

13.    Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Grade 10 plus one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

•    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
•    Ability to organize work.
•    Ability to deal with others effectively.
•    Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
•    Ability to operate related equipment.
