The Fabrication Engineering Group provides rapid fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of advanced hardware prototypes for national security applications. Examples include the precision machining fiber mounts for airborne high-energy laser systems, multi-functional structures using additive processes for ground-based radar systems, custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) for space-borne data processing, and highly integrated mechanical packaging for undersea communication terminals. Core mechanical competencies span precision fabrication, additive manufacturing, and 5-axis machining. The group concentrates on high-complexity parts, quick-turn capabilities, and activities that require concurrent engineering with program teams. Core PCB capabilities include design for manufacturability (DFM), automated solder paste dispensers, precise pick-n-place machines, and automated optical inspection systems. Assembly, integration, and test capabilities include integration spaces, clean rooms, vibration testing, thermal testing, and space simulation chambers. The Group focuses on state-of-the-art prototyping capabilities, technical excellence, exceptional collaboration, and outstanding operation.
Position Description
We are seeking a PCB Design and DFM Assistant Staff to support the implementation of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) practices in developing printed circuit boards (PCBs) for advanced engineering projects. In this role, you will support designing and fabricating printed circuit boards (PCBs) for advanced research and development projects. You will ensure that designs are manufacturable, reliable, and meet required specifications. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and address potential manufacturing challenges, perform DFM checks, and help maintain design documentation. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in DFM processes while contributing to the development of cutting-edge technologies for national security and defense applications.
Key Responsibilities
Support in the design and layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for various projects. Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis to ensure designs can be efficiently manufactured. Collaborate with senior engineers to optimize PCB designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability. Perform basic checks and simulations on PCB designs using industry-standard software tools. Coordinate with PCB fabrication and assembly teams to ensure smooth production. Review and maintain design documentation, including schematics, layouts, and specifications. Assist in the creation of design guidelines and standards for PCB development. Inspect and disposition bare boards and supporting manufacturers.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Knowledge of PCB design principles and DFM concepts. Knowledge of PCB manufacturing processes and materials. Familiarity with PCB design software (e.g., Expedition, Altium Designer, Cadence, or similar). Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision. Good communication skills and ability to collaborate in a team-oriented environment. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with simulation and verification tools for PCB design (Valor Software or similar) Familiarity with additive manufacturing of PCBs Experience with high-frequency or high-speed PCB design. Previous PCB Fabrication or PCBA Assembly experience Previous experience in a research or laboratory environment.
