Pediatric Genetic Counselor

With 80 pediatric physician specialists representing 25 medical and surgical disciplines, the team ensures the highest quality of care for infants and children, even those with the most complex or chronic conditions. **Pediatric Genetic Counselor Responsibilities:** • Work with multidisciplinary teams, including geneticists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, to diagnose and manage genetic disorders. • Support pediatric patients admitted to the hospital by providing genetic counseling, education, and risk assessment. • Triage patient referrals or professional inquiries for genetic consultation, including ascertainment of acuity of problem (especially if time sensitive as in pregnancy or newborn screening) and of the type of evaluation required (e.g. cancer, prenatal, pediatric, adult, etc). • Obtain patient history and review and analyze pertinent records, including medical records, and research records. • Obtain and evaluate a detailed pedigree using standardized nomenclature. • Provide comprehensive information to families and to health care providers regarding the etiology, inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, recurrence risks, and natural history/prognosis for genetic condition/diseases in culturally appropriate terms that each will comprehend. • Coordinate and obtain consent for appropriate genetic tests. • Assist in interpretation of genetic testing results, and help families understand the implications, and offers emotional support. • Participate in follow-up by tracking test results, reviewing as appropriate with the M.D. team member and conveying those results to patients (or contacting family if necessary) and other healthcare providers as requested. • Maintain detailed records of patient interactions, counseling sessions, genetic testing results. • Review genetic tests ordered for patients in the inpatient setting and provide support to BayCare labs in determining most appropriate test/lab for send outs. • Perform special projects as needed. **BayCare offers a competitive total reward package including:** • Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision) • Paid Time Off • Tuition Assistance • 401K Match and additional yearly contribution • Annual performance appraisals and team award bonus • Family resources and wellness opportunities • Community perks and discounts **Skills:** + Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with children and families. + Ability to explain complex genetic concepts in understandable terms. + Compassion and sensitivity in dealing with emotionally challenging situations. + Motivated and driven to integrate into new BayCare role. **Qualifications:** + **Education:** Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program. + **Certification:** Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or eligibility for certification. + **Experience:** Preferred prior experience in pediatric genetic counseling, with experience in an inpatient or hospital setting.
