Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS in 30 days of hire or transfer.
The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to help or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for help, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, examination, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.
\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
\n\nMonitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other team members informed.\nEnsures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used and the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.\nMonitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-help devices.\nMixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a way that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.\nAdjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a way that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.\nRecords relevant perfusion information during surgery; evaluates and maintains records after surgery.\nPerforms quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.\n\nKEY SUCCESS FACTORS
\n\nKnowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.\nKnowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.\nKnowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.\nKnowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, of pressures and gas exchange within the body adult, pediatric and infant patients.\nKnowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products by extracorporeal circuits and devices.\nSkill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.\nVerbal and written communication skills.\nAbility to follow orders, take directions, and deploy written perfusion protocols.\nAbility to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal help devices and providing patient care.\nAbility to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.\nAbility to work and join in a flexible way in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.\nAbility to react calmly in stressful situations.\n\nBENEFITS
