Perfusionist

Position Summary:  The Perfusionist is responsible for all clinical cardiovascular perfusion services and provides care in compliance with JCAHO standards and organization protocols, policies, procedures and guidelines. As such, he/she has twenty-four hour responsibility and accountability for all perfusion patient care activities in the OR. The Perfusionist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe, quality, age-appropriate care. Maintains clinical knowledge and skills competency to facilitate patient care in accordance with current standards of practice. 

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education:       Graduate of an accredited Perfusion program required.

                        BS degree in Health Sciences required.

Experience:     Minimum One year of previous Perfusion work experience

Licensure, Registration, or Certification:

                        Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion;

                        BLS required; ACLS preferred.

Position Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Assumes total responsibility for management of the patient on cardiovascular bypass during surgery by physiologic monitoring of patient and equipment, and supports the patient throughout surgery, taking supportive action as necessary including making appropriate recommendations for action by others on the surgical team.Maintains current working knowledge of medications needed for anti-coagulation, Ph buffering, diuresis, and restoration of normal coagulation.Takes responsibility for the cardiovascular bypass equipment, maintaining service and upkeep by following equipment protocol for each procedure, and reacts appropriately in a timely fashion to ensure availability of equipment when needed.Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of set up of the autotransfusion device,  including disposables, for use during cardiovascular bypass surgery.Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with aseptic technique in the OR.Nurtures and maintains communication with the surgical team to ensure optimal patient care.Maintains compliance with staff scheduling and flexibility with ongoing scheduling/on call needs to ensure optimal perfusion services.Demonstrates correct removal and disposal of contaminated disposables. Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids.        Maintains certification with the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.Demonstrates competencies, including knowledge and behaviors, to meet age-specific patient needs.Participates in the quality improvement standards of the cardiothoracic team.Maintains patient records to ensure accurate communication and continuity of patient’s medical treatment.Attends all mandatory in-services and required staff meetings. Accepts accountability for education provided pertaining to policies, procedures, and general patient care information, etc.Advances personal professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services, and workshops.Demonstrates ability to function under supervision. Participates in orientation of new staff members.Maintains patient confidentiality at all times and protects patient’s privacy.

Other Functions:

1.   Adheres to St. Francis Health System rules, regulations, and policies.

2.   Performs other duties as assigned.  Assists and supports other departments when needed.

Patient Population Served:   Adapts procedure to meet the individual needs of

the adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient for treatment, as well as demonstrates competence to provide psychosocial care for those patient populations.

Physical Requirements:  Constant, prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking.  Constant manual dexterity, visual and hearing acuity.  Frequent hearing, speech, and communication to patients and patient care staff members.  Body mobility that allows for frequent transfers, lifts, positioning, and pushing of patients, stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, and equipment.  Ability to stoop, bend, and to reach up over head.  Ability to maintain safety for combative and restless patients.  Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.

Environmental Requirements:  Frequently exposed to infectious, contagious, or blood-borne diseases.  May be exposed to hazardous anesthetic agents, hazardous surgical smoke, body fluids, and tissues.
