Perioperative Technician
Position Summary

Performs Perioperative Technician duties pertaining to preparation for anesthesia, and other surgical operations. Provides support and assistance for various surgical services, as well as Anesthesiologist and CRNA duties. Performs cleaning service duties to ensure a safe and sanitary environment for patients, visitors and employees. Assists with transporting patients and other miscellaneous duties as directed within the surgical department.

Minimum Qualifications Work Experience Previous Anesthesia Assistant, Patient Care, or Environmental Service experience preferred.
Education High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
Certifications/Licensure Certified Anesthesia, Central Sterile Supply, or EVS Technician preferred. Job Specific Performance Standards The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position. The position may require other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned, and specific functions may change from time to time.
  Provides assistance to procedural departments related to completion of work and work assignments within established policies and procedures of Med Center Health. Assists Anesthesia with induction by providing necessary airway adjuncts to Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist by providing dycoid pressure. Transfers patients from stretcher to O.R. table. Transports patients from departments as needed. (ie: sedated patient from radiology to PACU or MRI to PACU). Assists Anesthesiologist in procedures such as epidurals, arterial lines, and central lines in other areas as well as surgery. Prepares IV’s, arterial lines, block and central line set-ups for patient needs. Obtains IV access to upper extremity. Other areas include MRI, X-ray, Endoscopy, Labor and Delivery. Prepares for open-heart cases, which routinely include set up of infusions, invasive monitoring sets, various trays, equipment, and blood sets. Utilizes the appropriate chemicals and supplies according to procedure. Uses and maintains equipment properly. Responds during the conduct of cases for emergency supplies and equipment requests. Maintains surgical specialty carts for emergency situations. Checks for appropriate supplies and drugs. Cleans and stocks various machines and carts in areas that they are located, making sure they are in proper order. Maintain proper stock levels of supplies, by ordering from hospital distribution and special orders for items needed. Stores supplies and equipment in appropriate areas. Checks cabinets and other areas containing sterile supplies for expiration dates or compromised packaging. Remove items as needed and processes them in appropriate manner. Cleans various areas in surgery room between cases and at the end of each day to make sure breathing, circuits are changed, trash is removed, and proper equipment is ready for next case, if known. Cleans laryngoscope blades and processes them in Steris Sterilizer for proper sterilization. Checks for proper operation of laryngoscope handle and blades. Removes special and reusable material after cases and is responsible for cleaning in accordance with policy and procedure. Keeps work area clean, neat, and organized to ensure proper work environment. Performs routine cleaning of patient rooms, nursing units, offices, clinical areas, waiting areas, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, in a clean, neat and sanitary manner. Removes sharp disposal unit as needed, in appropriate manner. Transports trash and hazardous waste to appropriate disposal area. Prepares environmental services cart with needed supplies. Stocks linen carts, and assists with bed stripping and making beds in the recovery room(s). Prepares and submits necessary paperwork in a complete and timely manner (ie: survey data, discharge or transfer documentation, etc). Participates in unit meetings, in-services, educational classes, committees as assigned, and orientation of new employees. Understands and utilizes basic sterile technique and OSHA requirements when coming into an OR to assist team with positioning or equipment, including but not limited to recognizing sterile fields, recognizing when masks are required when entering an OR room for turnover on vascular and craniotomy cases, and also positioning a patient at the beginning of a case.
