Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated Ph.D. intern with expertise in AI, edge computing, and/or user experience research. The internship requires the candidate to test payloads such as small language models (LLMs) or deep learning models on laptops and workstations running Windows OS and embedded Android devices.
The role also involves partnering with research engineers at HP to develop automated tools for code distribution, managing workloads, conducting automated user experience testing, and benchmarking performance across a group of different edge devices. The intern will publish research based on their findings and be able to leverage this compute and test infrastructure for the purpose of their own research and dissertation activities.
Keywords: code profiling, system benchmarking, publishing data, Dockerization
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and benchmark small LLMs (and their quantized, fine-tuned versions) and/or deep learning models on diverse edge hardware, including laptops and workstations, and maintain benchmark leaderboards.
- Develop automated tools for distributing code and managing workloads across Windows-based devices.
- Conduct user experience testing to assess the impact and usability of AI models on edge hardware and contribute to the development of best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI systems while considering both performance and user experience.
- Conduct research that balances technical performance with user-centric considerations, leading to publications in AI and systems journals, and sharing of insights, processes, and best practices with the broader research community.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, user experience, or a related field, with a focus on edge computing or personal systems.
- Strong knowledge of machine learning, AI models, and user experience principles, particularly in edge computing environments.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or similar, with a focus on edge device optimization.
- Familiarity with tools for remote management, system imaging, and user experience testing on Windows PCs.
- Demonstrated ability to publish high-quality research papers in relevant fields.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance technical and user experience considerations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with performance benchmarking of AI models on edge devices.
- Knowledge of operating systems and hardware architecture specific to laptops and workstations.
What We Offer:
- Hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI research focused on edge devices and user experience.
- Opportunities to publish research and collaborate with leading experts in AI, edge computing, and UX.
- Access to state-of-the-art edge hardware and tools.
- A dynamic and inclusive work environment that fosters innovation and growth in AI systems and user experience research.
