Min Requirements: Current MS State Board of Pharmacy License required. Must be able to read, write and understand written and verbal communication.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Staff Pharmacist ensures the prompt and accurate delivery of medication to inpatient and outpatient care areas. Reviews physician orders ensuring appropriate therapy for the specified patient. Provides drug information to medical staff, nursing, and inpatients as requested. Supervises Pharmacy Technician I and II, Pharmacist Interns/Externs, and Pharmacy Assistants.
Ages Served: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for dispensing medications to outpatients.
a. Dispenses relabeled medications to discharged patients.
b. Outpatient prescriptions
c. Workman’s Compensation
d. Emergency room
e. Nursing Home patients
f. Hospice Patients
g. Employee Prescriptions as determined by Human Resources
h. Provides patient counseling for dispensed medications
2. Responsible for dispensing inpatient medications utilizing the unit dose system.
a. Upon order entry/verification screens patient profile for duplicates, drug interactions, allergies, and appropriate dose.
b. Enters/verify physician orders
c. Monitors age-specific information and food-drug interactions
d. Checks medications filled by technicians for accuracy prior to dispensing
e. Checks floor stock and emergency medications for accuracy before sending to patient care areas
f. Enures height, weight, and allergy information or recorded on all patients.
3. Responsible for dispensing IV admixture
a. Enters/Verifies IV orders on patient profile monitoring for duplications, allergies, drug interactions, appropriate dose, and dose timing.
b. Verifies accuracy of IV admixture labels prior to preparation.
c. Verifies accuracy of IV admixture preparation prior to dispensing.
d. Enures proper documentation of chemotherapy wastage.
e. Monitors laboratory information prior to admixing and dispensing of TPN solutions. Contacts prescriber when adjustments are warranted.
f. Ensures timely IV admixture delivery
4. Responsible for dispensing controlled substances.
a. Appropriate records and inventory are maintained in accordance with SCRMC policies and procedures.
b. Fills floor stock controlled substance fill lists (i.e. Omnicell)
5. Responsible for participating in drug therapy education of pharmacy interns and externs, new hire pharmacists, technicians, physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public.
a. Assists in the training of new technicians
b. Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, patients, and other hospital staff.
6. Responsible for the supervision of technician activities in the preparation and dispensing of medications.
7. Responsible for participating on various hospital interdisciplinary teams when requested.
8. Responsible for performing other pharmacy related responsibilities
a. Checks for accuracy of prepackaged medications
b. Identifies home medications when requested by hospital staff
c. Monitors inventory to ensure medications and supplies are ordered appropriately
d. Enures procurement of medications as needed from secondary sources
9. Responsible for adhering to hospital and department policies and procedures including:
a. Attendance
b. Attire and Appearance
c. Safety precautions and infection control
d. Inservice programs and department meetings
e. Any other policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
10. Performs all other jobs related duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids Used:

Telephone, hospital approved computer software/hardware, copy machines, fax machines, vertical and horizontal laminar flow hoods, unit dose machines, automated dispensing cabinets

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Generally this person will work in a well-lighted, well ventilated, heated, air-conditioned environment. Environmental demands include moderate lifting (50lbs), constant mental focus and concentration, and listening to low level noise. Must be able to respond quickly under pressure.

Education, Training, Experience, and Licenses/Registrations Required:

Staff Pharmacists shall be licensed in accordance with laws and regulations set forth by the State of Mississippi. Knowledge and experience with unit-dose drug distribution and intravenous admixture systems is desired, but not required. Preference will be given to individuals having experience in provision of drug information, pharmacotherapeutics, total parenteral nutrition, and drug literature evaluation.
