Description:The Pharmacy Supervisor is a licensed registered pharmacist accountable for leading, managing and advancing people, processes and / or programs that support direct or indirect patient care. The Pharmacy supervisor promotes and advocates for patients, pharmacists / colleagues and the practice of pharmacy as defined by clinical area(s) of expertise and assignment.

Responsible for providing leadership, oversight, alignment, and standardization for acute care and ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy services. Implements strategic and operational initiatives including new services/programs, revenue enhancement, expense reduction, managed care utilization systems, and strategies. Responsible for ensuring performance excellence in terms of quality, safety, service, affordability, and technology. Oversees drug utilization management efforts, manages educational activities, and provides subject matter expertise in assigned area.

Position Summary

Functional Role

Frontline, department-based, direct or indirect care department; Supervises daily functions, professional & frontline staff (multidisciplinary team) of assigned department; Accountable for the staff coordination, scheduling & assignment; Participates in & contributes to the performance management/review process; Supports or contributes to the daily performance, daily adherence to regulatory requirements & drives results of team within assigned department; Implements departmental plans & priorities identified by accountable pharmacy leaders.

Leadership - Provides leadership & retains accountability for delegation, choices, decisions, and outcomes. Supervises alignment and standardization for Pharmacy operations across the continuum of care to provide high-quality, cost-effective patient care in accordance with professional standards, regulatory and licensing agency policies, and federal and state laws related to the practice of Pharmacy. Acts independently and appropriately within license, scope of knowledge and experience in practice area. Exhibits agility and willingness to take on new and additional responsibilities. Embraces new ideas and cultural differences while managing competing priorities.

Goals – Collaborates with Pharmacy leaders, medical staff, and healthcare team to develop strategy, goals, objectives, and operational standards to ensure services and priority alignment. Responsible for the successful achievement of strategic objectives and goals and optimizing resources to achieve the desired outcomes. 

Quality and Compliance - Supports and promotes a culture based on the principles of continuous quality improvement. Collaborates with health care leaders to establish quality and compliance standards. Monitors quality assurance activities and issues, identifies opportunities, and creates corrective action plans to improve operational effectiveness. 

 Finance - Supports effective, judicious, and financially responsible use of resources. Collaborates in identifying analytics and metrics to demonstrate baseline and performance improvement targets. Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs), drives tactics, and implements actions plans. 

 Pharmacy Operations – Supervises medication safety measures and efficient integration of Clinical Pharmacy services into operational processes. Optimally utilizes and integrates technology and centralized support services

Clinical Services –Identifies and implements Clinical Pharmacy programs, and drug use improvement initiatives. Develops staff development program and education activities. Communicates drug information and appropriate medication use recommendations to appropriate stakeholders/committees. Oversees evaluation of drug products, medication utilization and therapeutic alternatives. Consults with health care team members regarding the appropriate utilization of drugs and influences prescribing to deliver quality, cost effective patient care. Serves as a subject matter expert in assigned Clinical Pharmacy practice area and participates in multi-disciplinary patient rounds. 

Professional Development – Supervises training, education, coaching, and assessment of pharmacist competencies. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, licenses, and certifications, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Creates and supports a work climate that empowers colleagues and values colleagues’ contributions. Supports pharmacy practice residency accreditation, and pharmacy student internship educational programs and maintains required documentation.

Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, licenses, and certifications, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Qualifications

 Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy is required. Advanced or Master’s degree preferred (e.g., PharmD, MBA). Board Certificated Pharmacotherapy Specialist ( BCPS) preferred.

Experience:  Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a pharmacist; or 1 year experience and 1 year Pharmacy Practice Residency.

Licensure: Licensed Pharmacist in the State of Michigan
