Description:The Pharmacy Leader (PL) is a licensed registered pharmacist accountable for leading, managing and advancing people, processes and / or programs that support direct or indirect patient care. The PL promotes and advocates for patients, pharmacists / colleagues and the practice of pharmacy across West Michigan.

Responsible for providing leadership, oversight, direction, alignment, and standardization for acute care, ambulatory, infusion, and community Clinical Pharmacy services. Implements strategic and operational initiatives including new services/programs, revenue enhancement, expense reduction, managed care utilization systems, and strategies. Responsible for ensuring performance excellence in terms of quality, safety, service, affordability, and technology. Oversees drug utilization management efforts, manages educational activities, and provides subject matter expertise in assigned area.POSITION PURPOSE

The Pharmacy Leader (PL) is a licensed registered pharmacist accountable for leading, managing and advancing people, processes and / or programs that support direct or indirect patient care.  The PL promotes and advocates for patients, pharmacists / colleagues and the practice of pharmacy as defined by clinical area(s) of expertise and assignment.

Responsible for providing leadership, oversight, direction, alignment, and standardization for acute care and ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy services. Implements strategic and operational initiatives including new services/programs, revenue enhancement, expense reduction, managed care utilization systems, and strategies. Responsible for ensuring performance excellence in terms of quality, safety, service, affordability, and technology. Oversees drug utilization management efforts, manages educational activities, and provides subject matter expertise in assigned area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leadership – Provides leadership & retains accountability for delegation, choices, decisions & outcomes. Directs alignment and standardization for Pharmacy Clinical Services across the continuum of care to provide high-quality, cost-effective patient care in accordance with professional standards, regulatory and licensing agency policies, and federal and state laws related to the practice of Pharmacy. Acts independently & appropriately within license, scope of knowledge & experience in practice area. Exhibits agility and willingness to take on new and additional responsibilities. Embraces new ideas and cultural differences while managing competing priorities.

Goals – Partners with executive leaders, medical staff, and healthcare team to develop strategy, goals, objectives, and operational standards to ensure services and priority alignment. Responsible for the successful achievement of strategic objectives and goals and optimizing resources to achieve the desired outcomes.

Quality and Compliance - Creates and promotes a culture based on the principles of continuous quality improvement. Collaborates with health care colleagues to establish quality and compliance standards. Monitors quality assurance activities and issues, identifies opportunities, and creates corrective action plans to improve operational effectiveness.

Finance - Ensures appropriate operational and capital budgets are prepared for Clinical Pharmacy services. Influences effective, judicious, and financially responsible use of resources. Collaborates in identifying analytics and metrics to demonstrate baseline and performance improvement targets. Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs), drives tactics, and implements actions plans.

Pharmacy Operations – Responsible for medication safety measures and efficient integration of Clinical Pharmacy services into operational processes. Optimally utilizes and integrates technology and centralized support services.

Clinical Services – Responsible for identifying and implementing Clinical Pharmacy programs, and drug use improvement initiatives. Develops staff development program and education activities. Communicates drug information and appropriate medication use recommendations to appropriate stakeholders/committees. Oversees evaluation of drug products, medication utilization and therapeutic alternatives. Consults with health care team members regarding the appropriate utilization of drugs and influences prescribing to deliver quality, cost effective patient care. Serves as a subject matter expert in assigned Clinical Pharmacy practice area and participates in multi-disciplinary patient rounds.

Professional Development – Responsible for training, education, coaching, and assessment of pharmacist competencies. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, licenses, and certifications, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Creates a work climate that empowers colleagues and values colleagues’ contributions. Supports pharmacy practice residency accreditation, and pharmacy student internship educational programs and maintains required documentation.

Procurement - Supports the drug procurement process including overseeing therapeutic alternatives to drug shortages, recalls, and formulary changes.  Assumes responsibility for investigational drugs.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity and Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, as well as other policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

FUNCTIONAL ROLE:

Responsible for Clinical Pharmacy operations and /or optimization leadership to professional and/or frontline staff, supervisors and/or managers. Retains accountability for staff coordination, training, hiring, performance, regulatory compliance, and results. Develops departmental plans, including organizational priorities. Controls resources, effectiveness, and policy formation in area of responsibility. Collaborates with larger teams of health professionals to plan for long-term patient care needs.

Operations-focus: Directly manages Clinical Pharmacy services. Decisions are guided by resource availability as informed by operational need, functional objectives, and clinical drivers of the Pharmacy. Responsible for driving outcomes through the daily management of resources; primarily patient facing.Optimization-focus (advance, improve, enhance, leverage): Manages indirect or patient care department/program. Priorities are guided by the operational and clinical needs. Develops plans in concert with Pharmacy Managers/Directors in support of the department functional objectives & clinical drivers where support is assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy is required. Advanced or Master’s degree preferred (e.g., PharmD, MBA)   

Experience:  Minimum of ten (5) years’ experience as a pharmacist. Minimum two (2) years of pharmacy management experience.

Licensure:  Current pharmacist state licensure where employed.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Proven leadership skills in relationship to motivating and empowering staff. Preferred experience working in an organization of comparable size and complexity, preferably in healthcare.

Written and verbal communication skills to interpret and/or discuss technical or sensitive information with internal and external customers. Discretion in deciding what and how to communicate. Oral presentation skills to maximize the impact of thoughts transmitted.

Organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful due to time constraints.

Strong analytical and cognitive skills necessary to prepare operating budgets and interpret financial trends, define system problems, develop alternatives, and implement new procedures that are cost effective and continuously improve quality.

Critical thinking skills ad ability to develop innovative programs and strategies to effectively respond to a rapidly changing health care environment.

Ability to apply continuous quality improvement principles to define system problems, develop alternatives, implement solutions, and measure the outcome.

Working knowledge of Microsoft office products, including word, Excel, PowerPoint and other graphics or presentation software.

Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position may require potentially prolonged periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.

Must possess the ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures.
