Pharmacy Medication Use Strategist

 

The Medication Use Strategist, in collaboration with pharmacy, medical and nursing leadership, functions to optimize prescribing and dispensing strategies that ensure the highest quality individual care, improve population health, and minimize cost for targeted medications and disease states. This person will convene multidisciplinary teams to formulate recommendations, initiatives, and intervention strategies to optimize medication use. This person will serve as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Pharmacoeconomic Committees and coordinate presentation of drugs for formulary consideration and medication use evaluations and pharmacoeconomic analyses to these committees. The Medication Use Strategist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. This person will collaborate with clinical staff as well as hospital and finance leadership to enable responsible and effective use of novel, high-touch therapies.

Responsibilities Collaborates with the Pharmacy Business Manager on budgeting needs for new drugs and ensuring solid authorization and reimbursement mechanisms are in place.Leads implementation of complex therapies as a liaison between the clinical team, hospital finance, and hospital leadershipEngages with drug companies and insurers to create hospital and patient access and drive appropriate medical policy development.In collaboration with clinical and administrative team members, leads department in cost-containment initiatives specific to patients served by Nationwide Children’s and Partners for Kids.Coordinates the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee agenda and leads presentation of drug monographs and Medication Use Evaluations to this Committee.Chairs the Pharmacoeconomic Committee and coordinates evaluation and optimal prescribing, dispensing, and administration of targeted medications.Completes project development and implementation using established quality improvement methodologies, interfacing with Business Process Improvement and Quality Improvement Services, and other service lines as appropriate.Prioritizes medications for analysis and review.Assesses prescribing patterns and appropriateness of use of medications.Conducts pharmacoeconomic analyses of medication use.Partnering with content experts, identifies and drafts guidelines for use of select medications.Anticipates changes in drug development that may impact cost of care.Collaborates with investigational drug services to transition therapies from research to commercial use.Serves as a preceptor for intermediate or advanced pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.Serves on hospital and departmental committees as needed.Participates in local, state, and national pharmacy organizations and/or programs related to pharmacy practice.Demonstrates flexibility and skill to work directly with staff in all pharmacist positions, if needed. Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

Education:

Doctor of Pharmacy (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college of PharmacyMaster’s degree (MS, MBA, MHA, et al) and/or completion of a pharmacy residency strongly preferredCompletion of PGY2 residency training or five years of progressive experience in health system pharmacy clinical or administrative roles

Licensure:

Licensure, or licensure-eligibility, to practice as pharmacist in the state of Ohio, required.

Certifications:

Board of Pharmacy Specialists (BPS) Board Certification preferred

Skills:

Evidence of strong finance, drug information, clinical and leadership skills.Ability to lead and direct the staff and their activitiesMust possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivateBasic skills in using and documenting in an electronic medical record
