The Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist, MM (Materials Management) provides support to the Pharmacy Department, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist, MM is responsible for all purchasing related activities at the Longwood location and reviewing and approving orders at all pharmacy locations. The Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist, MM participates in pharmacy supply chain management with internal departments and external vendors.
Additional responsibilities include providing cross-coverage to Materials Management areas when necessary and leading the orientation and training of all purchasing related processes.

Responsibilities Practices in accordance with all federal (e.g., Drug Supply Chain Security Act), state, and DFCI and Joint Commission policies, regulations, and standards.Responsible for all purchasing related activities such as, the preparation of purchase orders for the daily purchase of drugs and supplies at Longwood, reviewing and approving orders at all pharmacy locations, maintaining appropriate par levels based on usage patterns, etc. May assist in the daily management of backordered medications and supplies.Participate in pharmacy supply chain management with internal departments and external vendors (e.g., alternative meds, new drugs, working with wholesaler, etc.).Participates in the process for maintaining pharmacy items and price in pharmacy inventory systems.Maintains purchasing-related metrics and reporting including month-end report, purchasing volumes, etc.Leads the orientation and training of all purchasing related processes including the use multiple purchasing systems (e.g., RxScan, PeopleSoft, etc.). May conduct site visits to remote locations to ensure purchasing process are being followed and providing hands-on re-training as necessary. Works with Materials Management team to identify gaps in processes and any specific drug or supply related issues. Works in coordination with the Inventory Specialist to identify issues with data in our inventory management systems at all locations. Ensures that the main pharmacy areas are kept well organized, well stocked, and participates in routine inventory management activities (e.g., physical inventory, expired medication, drug recalls, etc.).Participates in the testing of purchasing system upgrades.Provides cross-coverage to Materials Management areas when necessary and may be assigned to cross-cover other pharmacy areas (e.g., processing room, outpatient, inventory and purchasing).Leads one special project per year.Performs other duties as assigned. QualificationsMinimum Education:
High School or GED required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
Minimum Experience:
5 years of equivalent business/inventory control experience or 5 of years of DFCI Materials Management Technician experience with 3 years as a Materials Management Technician III; 1-years of prior pharmacy purchasing experience preferred. Pharmacy technician experience preferred.
License/Certification/Registration:
Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician required within 6 months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Ability to adjust work time and schedule to meet daily demands in fast-paced environment.Ability to utilize pharmacy technology systems and Microsoft Suite of programs. (Intermediate Excel and Visio).Knowledge of inventory management control systems.Ability to independently troubleshoot issues and assist in resolution or escalation to the appropriate resource.Ability to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost professionalism and respect.
