Description:

Pharmacy technicians are responsible for the day-to-day activity of the pharmacy department. Their primary focus is to provide accurate order entry into the pharmacy system & filling of orders. Technicians work under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy or staff pharmacists who are ultimately responsible for their activities. Delivering of medications to various areas also required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Collect physician orders from nursing units regularly.Read, interpret, and enter medication orders into pharmacy computer system for verification by a pharmacist.Select doses of medications and place medications in patient’s bin.Deliver medications to patient care areas.Provide excellent customer service to co-workers & staff of other departments.Process transfers and discharges of patient medications to ensure patient safety.Complete required safety training.Answer phones and transfer calls as necessary according to importance.Perform patient and departmental billing.Assist pharmacist in preparing drugs for dispensing. Related activities include, but are not limited to: appropriate product selection, sterile and nonsterile compounding, labeling and repackaging with completion of appropriate records, maintaining an accurate medication profile for each patient receiving medication within the institution according to department and hospital policies and procedures.Assist with management of drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock (with proper rotation of items), arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting the need for ordering items, etc.Assist pharmacist in ensuring that drug storage locations are maintained in an appropriate manner. (i.e. floor stock, “crash” carts, Omnicell cabinets, etc.).Perform inventory control of products in the pharmacy.Mitigate drug shortages.Participate in and/or provide support to Hospital committees as agreed upon by committee members and the Director of Pharmacy.Assist in the training and orientation of new pharmacy personnel.Perform other tasks as assigned by staff pharmacists or the Director of Pharmacy to ensure appropriate workflow or completion of special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduate or equivalent with national certification or agreement to purse national certification within the first 12 months of employment.Attentive to detail and possess strong mathematic skills.Communicates effectively and provides good customer service.Ability to deliver medications, answer phone, multi-task, prioritize, etc.
