The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist by performing assignments relative to the handling and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related clerical tasks. In addition, the pharmacy technician performs all pharmacy related functions under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. RESPONSIBILITIES Operates the Carousel according to the work queue. This includes Automated Dispensing Machine (ADM) refills, stock-outs, critical lows, first doses, STAT doses, etc. Performs medication delivery/pick-up to and from patient care areas while adhering to the scheduled timeframes. Prepares floor stock requisitions emanating from the Carousel queue as directed by the workload queue. Performs scheduled routine cycle counts on the Carousel per the workload queue. Maintains the Carousel, as well as all Inventory Static Areas (ISAs), and IV Room with adequate supplies during shift. Maintains overall cleanliness of the department at all times. Performs routine monthly department inspections on time. Prepares and replenishes Emergency medication trays for code cart replenishment. Performs routine inspections in approved medication storage areas within hospital on a monthly basis or as directed. Supports the pharmacist in the preparation of sterile products and related functions supporting this area. Notates and prepares SPD orders and places order into stock during shift. Acts as a liaison between purchasing with regard to pharmaceutical purchases on a daily basis. Performs bulk manufacturing and repackaging activities as needed. Promptly answers telephones and triages non-clinical calls. Takes messages for the pharmacist when calls of a clinical nature are received. Communicates this to the pharmacist on duty. Assists in all activities at the pharmacy window. Assists in the distribution of controlled substances and the related procedures when directed. Assists in the development of departmental policy and procedures, as necessary. Participates in departmental Continuous Quality Improvement activities, as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE One year experience as Pharmacy Technician in either retail or hospital setting or a graduate of an approved Pharmacy Technician training program required. EDUCATION High school or equivalent required LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred OTHER Basic understanding of units of measure and arithmetic and general clerical skills to include typing and filing; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Assists in the training and orientation of new non-professional support personnel. Presents a positive attitude. Prepares new hire to have skills sets beyond “routine” tasks Responsible for identifying and addressing tasks related to the daily operational needs, which can be performed by a technician. Presents a leadership quality.
