Position Summary:
The certified pharmacy technician must have the ability to work all technician shifts within the department. This position must possess familiarity with all aspects of Pyxis, inventory management, billing/charging, medication compounding (sterile and non-sterile) and repacking of medications. In addition, this technician will work closely with the Pharmacy Automation Specialist, and Billing and Regulatory Compliance technicians to ensure compliance with policy, protocol, and regulations. The technician agrees to support the goals, objectives, and proper function of the department and the hospital, to provide positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient confidentiality. The technician will comply with the policies, laws, regulations, and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy as well as those of the hospital. The technician will maintain an appropriate level of competency, to perform the job duties as required by the department, the hospital and any regulatory agencies.
Essential Functions:
• Assist the pharmacist in meeting the pharmaceutical needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of medication preparation, prepacking, and compounding.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of Pyxis including refilling, loading, outdating, and destocking medications, as well as proficiency in CII safe transactions.
• Follow processes to ensure the safety & quality of sterile products compounded within the pharmacy department in accordance with USP 797 Standards
• Demonstrate and ensure completion of annual medication related competencies and continuing education requirements
• Maintain and evaluate medication management and security within the Pharmacy department and throughout the hospital.
• Actively work with Lead Technician to ensure optimization of inventory including ordering, maintaining proper par levels, and addressing expired and recalled medications.
Education:
High School graduate or equivalent required with specialized training in an accredited pharmacy Technician program requiredExperience:
3 years of hospital experience preferred.Licenses/Certifications:
Pharmacy Technician Certification registration with LLR/SC Board of Pharmacy required. Nationally PTCB Certification required.Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff.Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.Ability to work all the technician shifts at both hospitals, including the dispensing roles and medicationreconciliation roles. Ability to set priorities, make decisions, and respond quickly to emergency requests. Familiarity with Pyxis, Pyxis operations, Inventory management, and Billing/Compliance issues. Must recognize most pharmaceuticals with basic understanding of dosage, dosage forms, and routes of administrationAbility to prioritize and balance workloadAbility to locate and evaluate pharmaceutical informationExcellent computer skills including EMR, Outlook, internetExcellent communication and customer service skillsReviews and updates Tidelands Medication reconciliation policy as needed.Must maintain an appropriate level of competencyStrong knowledge of medications required.
