Job Description

Autonomous driving is one of the most demanding research topics of our time. The enormous complexity of real-world driving situations gives rise to an outstanding challenge: How can it be assessed whether an automated driving system is safe to drive without any supervision - knowing that there are so many more situations out there that no one might even think of from today's perspective?

In this position, you will face this challenge under the aspect of statistical validation: You will bridge the gap between theory and application by contributing to mathematical theory (particularly to probability theory and statistics) as well as by applying your ideas and concepts to real-world driving data. You will work in a team of interdisciplinary scientists. By appropriate statistical modelling, you will investigate the possibility to look beyond the data and to anticipate the remaining risks that are hiding out there.

QualificationsEducation: excellent Master degree in Mathematics or comparableExperience and Knowledge: profound knowledge in probability theory and statistics (desirable: experience in the area of extreme value theory, beneficial: advanced knowledge in goodness-of-fit testing, likelihood theory and/or dependence modelling), basic programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R) and the willingness to extend them further are requiredPersonality: highly self-motivated, logical-structured thinking, flexible, communicative as well as team playerWorking Practice: structured, goal-oriented, self-dependent and creativeEnthusiasm: passion for new ideas and for the application of mathematical theory to real-world problemsLanguages: fluent in English or German with good reading and writing skills in English
