Phenotyping Specialist

The Corteva Agriscience Lethbridge Research Station is focused on corn and canola product testing around Southern Alberta. We use advanced field research and agriculture equipment for planting, spraying, phenotyping, and harvesting our plots.

Our peak workload seasons are from late April through mid-May and from July through October, with some overtime required during these periods.

All necessary training will be provided.

This position will primarily focus on canola inbred observation trials.

What You'll Do:

Directly involved in field experiment planning, field equipment/machinery maintenance and operation, plot seeding and maintenance including herbicide application, data collection, and harvesting.Responsible for scheduling and performing minor preventative and service work on field equipment and coordinating with our research equipment group.Manage and conduct experiments to completion, according to specific procedures, exercising independent judgment and discretion as appropriate. This includes, but not limited to, the knowledge of general agronomic practices and evaluation procedures, crop scouting, computer skills, field data collection, data quality analysis, seed handling & logistics.Provide development, analysis, and maintenance support to Research Equipment Support Team. Inspects and perform minor routine maintenance on sophisticated research equipment used to conduct experiments.Safety program implementation.

What Skills You Need:

College degree in Plant Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, or other relevant majors in agriculture required. Equivalent level of relevant education and experience will be considered.Experience with field crop plot research and/or agricultural production including farm equipment operation and maintenance.Computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).Experience with field crop research or agricultural production.Operation and maintenance of agricultural equipment (tractor, planter, sprayer, combine, etc.) and/or related farm machinery experience.Agronomic knowledge including crop production, herbicide knowledge, tillage practices, crop scouting, pest identification and problem solving.A valid pesticide applicator license is an asset.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols.Detail-oriented, with time management and organizational skills.Computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and the ability to readily learn new software.Self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, improvements, decisions, and problem solving.Ability to work well independently or with a team and to communicate effectively with team members.Extended hours and occasional weekend hours may be required during peak periods.Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.Outdoor work during the growing season is required. May be required to do physical lifting and work in varying ergonomic environments.Previous experience with canola and hybrid seed production practices is an asset.
