Summary:
Vighter is recruiting multiple Phlebotomists to provide lab support and blood draw services for the Veterans Healthcare System in Columbia, SC. A phlebotomist performs the essential task of drawing blood from patients for medical or laboratory testing, transfusions, donations, or research purposes. They are responsible for ensuring patient comfort, maintaining sample integrity, and accurately labeling and documenting samples for proper identification and processing. The care would be given at the San Antonio VA, a state-of-the-art health care facility; and the standard of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding all currently recognized national standards.
Principle Accountabilities:
Venipuncture and Capillary Puncture: Perform venipuncture (drawing blood from veins) and capillary puncture (drawing blood from fingertips or heels) using appropriate techniques. Patient Interaction: Interact with patients in a courteous and professional manner, explaining procedures to alleviate anxiety and ensure cooperation. Sample Collection: Collect blood samples from patients according to established protocols, ensuring correct patient identification and sample labeling to prevent errors. Specimen Handling: Properly handle blood samples to maintain sample integrity, including labeling, storing, and transporting specimens as required. Equipment Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and operational efficiency of phlebotomy equipment, including needles, tubes, and specimen containers. Documentation: Record patient information, test results, and other pertinent data accurately and promptly in electronic or paper medical records systems. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, including infection control measures, to ensure the safety of patients and oneself. Follow established procedures and guidelines to maintain compliance with regulatory standards. Communication: Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and laboratory personnel, regarding patient care and sample collection issues. Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance activities, such as proficiency testing and quality control monitoring, to ensure accurate and reliable test results. Direct patient care is estimated at 95% and administrative time 5%Knowledge and Skills:
Must have exceptional customer service skills. Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently. Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision Excellent organizational, scheduling and prioritization skills.Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (some positions may require post-secondary education or certification). Certification or licensure as a phlebotomist.Qualifications:
Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and blood collection procedures. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols and procedures. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:
The expected duty hours for this position are 8 hours per day and 5 days per week. However, this key position supporting 24/7/365 operations which may require work to be conducted in the day, at night, on weekends, and during holidays.Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day, must be willing to work overtime if necessary. Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 10 feet. Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders. Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print. Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear. Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment Must undergo Urine Drug Screening (UDS). Positions require applicants to be US Citizens, 21 years or older.
