ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

____ 1. Patient Assessment/Reassessment
Conducts waived and moderate complexity clinical laboratory tests, reviewed andreleased by the laboratory technologist/MT or technician/MLT.
Keeps an accurate and valid account of quality control/assurance measures, i.e.performance of on-board quality control test features.
____ 2. Care of Patient
Performs venipuncture procedure on patients per physician order, in consideration of the individual patient situation.Upon approval of the Medical Director or his/her designee, performs arterial punctures on patients ten years or older.
____ 3. Management of Information
Responsible for efficiently operating HIS/LIS in order to perform order entry andobtain requisitions for collection needs.
Responsible for efficient handling and preparation of collected specimens to betested within the department or sent to reference laboratory, including
accession and centrifugation.
The associate will hold in confidence any and all patient informationcommunicated or stored using any medium including oral communication. In
addition, the associate will seek to protect patient information from inadvertent
use or disclosure by adhering to hospital and Triad Blue Book policies.
_____ 4. Pain Management
When preparing to perform venipuncture or arterial punctures, educate the patientregarding pending procedure and complete procedure in as painless manner as
possible, assessing the pain tolerance especially in difficult collections.
_____ 5. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Has completed annual Heartsaver CPR certification requirement..
_____ 6. Patient Safety
Identify patient by verbal request and confirmation by checking armband.Performs copying, filing, charting and faxing of all diagnostic testing as instructedby MT or MLT.
Knowledgable about latex allergy precautions, document in outpatient chart.
_____ 7. Patient/Family Education
Explains treatment procedures to patients and/or family, at patient’s permission, in an effective manner, gathering and exchanging patient related information from physicians and other hospital personnel where appropriate.Communicates by recognizing learning barriers and cultural differences.
_____ 8. Performs duties from the Diagnostic Assistant duties list such as filing surgical
pathology slides, stocking supplies. Keep up appearance of Laboratory, boxes off
floor, etc.
_____ 9. Demonstrates age appropriate competency skills and knowledge, displays ability to
perform skills specific to patient population identified in unit specific skill list:

_____ 10. Maintain, including clean and adequately stock all collection trays or related areas.
Responsible for knowing the lifting requirement of the job, and requesting assistance
when appropriate.

Contributes to Performance Improvement activities at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Must have basic PC skills including: typing, word processing and following menu
driven training programs.
Performs other duties as assigned and/or required.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Formal Training Required:
Must be a high school graduate, or have the ability to read in order to verify patient information and physician’s orders, to write in order to document information and maintain records and logs.
Experience Required:
Prior phlebotomy experience is preferred, but not required.

None
Other:
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when preparing, performing, and documenting treatment activities.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent lifting, bending, stooping, walking and standing. Work may require an awkward or strained position to be assumed for short periods of time in lifting, handling patients and/or equipment, or in performing certain procedures. Lifting duties may be performed up to 30 percent of work time, and standing/walking up to 70 percent.
Normal clinical laboratory with potentially hazardous conditions due to direct exposure to contagious viruses, bacteria, etc. during the performance of patient care. Limited exposure to reagent chemicals or equipment or supplies.
