Job Overview: Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques for clinical laboratory testing and age appropriateness of patient. (Patient population includes neonatal through geriatrics). Performs routine processing of laboratory specimens by verifying patient information, order entry via computer terminals, labeling and delivery to the appropriate testing area; includes inpatient and outpatient requests. Answers phones and routes messages to appropriate personnel. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

The Laboratory Phlebotomist accurately enters orders into the computer, or prepares a manual downtime form, verifies the Patient Name, Medical Record Number including date of service, Physician, and tests ordered prior to accepting the information into the patient record,The Phlebotomist can follow proper technique and skills required to perform the Bleeding Time Test and demonstrates an extensive technical knowledge of the requirements of laboratory specimen collection to include: proper choice of tube and container, correct preservatives, proper environmental conditions heat, cold, time limits between collection and testing, fasting state, and the adverse effects certain specimen conditions hemolysis, dilution by IV fluids, Lipemia, etc,Is able to distribute reports generated by the Laboratory Information System to the M,D,Mail reports to physicians not on staff, and call or fax reports to MD offices.The Phlebotomist can obtain blood samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture on adults, children, and neonates in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and can assist Laboratory Technologists with technical functions as required and as allowed by regulatory agencies,Additional responsibilities include servicing Outreach Clients including but not limited to: Skilled Nursing Facilities, Physician Offices, Retirement Villages, and Drawing Stations by performing phlebotomy, providing supplies, picking up specimens, assuring all required information is on requisition forms, scheduling patients, keeping up maintenance charts, and furnishing reports requested by clients and performs all other duties as assigned,Choosing RWJBarnabas Health!
