Job Description
The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures while ensuring patient comfort and understanding during specimen collection.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures.Update patient information accurately.Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.Understand all physician orders thoroughly.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.Ensure test requisitions or computer labels match scripts 100% correctly.Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature.Follow procedures specific to protocol for specimen transport.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsProficiency in blood draw and venipuncture techniques.Experience in specimen collection and labeling.Ability to centrifuge specimens.Minimum of 3 years of experience, including hard stick experience.Customer service skills.Additional Skills & QualificationsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.Work Environment
The position is in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting with a fairly large and high-volume patient service center. The role involves standing for most of the shift and dealing primarily with geriatric patients, who make up 90% of the clientele. The phlebotomist will work both independently and as part of a team, with training provided during the first week. The job requires 10-30 draws daily, with work hours from Monday to Friday, either 8am-5pm or 9:30am-6:30pm. Candidates must cover parking expenses, which can be reimbursed with receipts.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
