Phlebotomist I Job Description The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves working with patients to collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Responsibilities + Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate as needed. + Update patient information accurately. + Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. + Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection methods clearly and courteously. + Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. + Fully understand and follow all physicians' orders. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. + Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. + Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures. Essential Skills + Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques. + Competence in venipuncture, particularly with pediatrics and geriatrics. + Ability to handle hard sticks and use butterfly needles effectively. Additional Skills & Qualifications + At least 1 year of experience in phlebotomy. + Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish, are a significant advantage. + Prior experience in a hospital setting is beneficial. Work Environment This position is based at the Patient Service Center in East Syracuse. The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 6:45 AM to 3:45 PM, with rotating Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
