Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, and properly explaining the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods to patients. The phlebotomist must demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles, understand physicians' orders, and ensure the correct handling and labeling of specimens.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
+ Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods clearly and courteously to patients.
+ Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Fully understand and comply with all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport and store specimens according to required temperatures.
+ Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department trainings.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
+ Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ 2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy.
+ Verifiable experience drawing on all age groups.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Customer service skills.
+ Experience in specimen processing and diagnostic lab settings.
Work Environment
This position operates in a Monday through Friday schedule from 7 am to 3:30 pm. The work environment is fast-paced, typically within a lab or hospital setting. The phlebotomist will utilize various technologies and equipment required for specimen collection and processing.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $18.00
