Phlebotomist Trainee

This role will provide current phlebotomy trainees with the opportunity to learn the phlebotomy field.  Trainees will attend lectures in a classroom setting and complete a clinical rotation in a Patient Service Center. 

This program is an 9 week program from April 14th to June 13th, 2025, with typical times from 8AM to 4:30PM, but may vary as you get into clinical rotations. This enables a student to complete at least 40 hours of classroom training and 100 hours of clinical hours at an HNL Lab Medicine Patient Service Center to fulfill ASCP Certification examination requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Performs venipunctures.  Collects other specimens and explains the proper collection procedures for specimens provided by the patient. Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements when appropriate.

Learns to make accurate, initial assessment of specimen suitability according to criteria outlined in the Laboratory Handbook and department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Processes, stores and transports specimens according to the Laboratory Handbook and SOPs.

Works under direct supervision and performs general duties as assigned by the designated department.

Performs all paperwork, technical, and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of changes in specimen requirements and collection devices.

A.         Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

B.         Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently may be required based on service location.

C.         Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

D.         Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

E.         Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software.

F.         Certificates and Licenses:

A valid driver’s license from the state that the employee resides as well as a clean driving record.  Must be accessible to appropriate and reliable transportation to perform essential duties and responsibilities. CPR Certification encouraged but not mandatory.
